If I am guessing right, we all must have watched Dil Wale Dulhaniya, Kabhi khushi Kabhi Gam, kuch kuch hota hai, Chennai Express; the list is never ending, numerous times. all such movies overrated movies, these movies were made with established artists of their time, with fancy execution, lot of music, melodrama and a typical storyline.
And while busy celebrating these films, we ignored some beautiful works of Indian Cinema, that should have been celebrated and promoted because of their beautiful storyline, character development, subtlety of emotions and of course amazing acting by the artists.
Hamid
Hamid was released in 2018; it is an adaptation of the play “Phone No. 786” by Mohd. Amin Bhat. It is a poignant yet heart –warming tale of a seven year old Hamid who regularly dials number 786 when he discovers that this is Allah’s number to ask him about his missing father and one day his phone call is answered.
This is a tale that shows longing of little Hamid to meet his father who had gone missing.
The film starts with Hamid’s father Rehmat Ali working on his boat, which is what he does for living. One beautiful quote that stuck with me from this scene is “Paani ke sahare chlne valo ko maujo se inkar nhi krna chye” (clashing with waves is inevitable for those who depend on water).
The film displays Hamid’s melancholy of losing his father, he memorizes the time he had spent with his father, the memory of them singing Kashmiri folk together. This showed contrasting conditions of Hamid.
The film has very beautifully portrayed Hamid’s relationship with each and every character. The relationship that I rooted for was between Hamid and Allah, so pure and innocent.
I am not going to give spoilers on anything. But I urge you guys to please watch this film. It is in the backdrop of Kashmir and it has shown the issues of Kashmir with so much subtlety and sensitivity, that the tale of a young child’s longing for his father has not been sidelined.
Ram Prasad Ki Tehrvi
It is a 2019 film, a dark comedy, a movie that showed the reality of dynamics of most of the households. I came across this movie through the song “Ek Adhura Kaam”, which I thought is from a 90s movie but then through this beautiful song I discovered this masterpiece.
This movie on its outset showed the whole family gathering to attend the 13 day ritual following the death of the family’s head, and explored the insecurities of each and every family member with such relatability.
Right from elders of the family creating ruckus on small things, children of the late father thinking with whom their mother will live and how they will split the property of their father, drinking alcohol and watching TV, all these showed their insensitive attitude towards the tragic incident.
This film is a subtle satire on the entire middle class household whose dynamics changes on happening of an event and saying of things by the family members which has never been told before.
The film also shows the helplessness of a wife whose partner has left her amidst all these hate and insecurities, and Supriya Pathak has portrayed the character really well.
The film with its amazing storyline is coupled with outstanding and natural performances of its artists. I recommend you to watch this if you have interest in genre of dark comedy.
Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi
It is a 2013 film, if you are into feel good, road journey movies, then this one’s for you. Kasi and sunni, two best friends embarks on a journey of love, kasi sets out to find his girlfriend Assi and sunni to find his love on this journey, while meeting various people on their journey which gave them a perspective.
This film shows how kasi and sunni met different people on their journey and develops a beautiful bond with them. This shows how a road trip can give you answers to the questions, if you genuinely venture on them.
Do watch this film as this is a treasure that has captured the beauty of roads and different people on the roads. So yes do give it a watch.
Agent Sai Srinivasa Athreya
It is a 2021 film, packed with suspense and thrill. If you have an absolute love for crime thriller just like me and if it is your favourite genre like mine, then this film is a perfect watch for you.
Inspired from real incidents, this film deals with a less known criminal issue from the crime world, and has undoubtedly portrayed it with perfection. The movie is a mix of comedy and crime thriller, filled with twists and turns that glues you to the screen.
Most importantly, I would want to acknowledge the performances of the whole cast, especially my personal favourite Naveen Polishetty, playing the lead role of Agent Sai, his charm on the screen is something that makes you want to watch more of him.
So yes, these are the films that I found really great in every aspect, be it storyline, character development, performances of the cast, dialogues, superb cinematography (especially in Hamid and Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi) and most importantly as a viewer the feel and vibe of these movies.
At the end all I would say is do give these and many other underrated works a watch and appreciate the real art of cinema that these movies reflects.
