1. Tell us about your background and journey.
I was born and brought up in Rajasthan. Did my schooling from Udaipur, before moving to Mumbai where I learned script writing from a film school as a part of my higher studies. Writing has been my passion and I started my writing career in Bengaluru working for a food blogger in 2016 and ever since haven't looked back. I knew this is what I wanted to do and the Pandemic made me realize that if I can do things for someone, I could better be doing the same for myself since I love cooking, writing, and knowing a bit about storytelling through film school. I thought of starting something of my own. That is when “The Spicy Story” happened.
After getting married, I took it up full-time and started posting videos on Instagram. I worked on the recipes and the content, and my husband helped me capture the videos and we sat and edited at night. People loved the recipes I was posting and we started growing.
One of our recipes went viral and reached over 28 million views and we grew from 2K to 100K in less than a month. We are growing every day, and that is what keeps me going.
2. What is your experience with creating recipes? How long have you been a recipe developer?
I have worked in the food blogging business for 7 years, so I have been developing recipes for as long as 7 years now, around 5 years for other food bloggers and around 2 years for "The Spicy Story"
3. What do you believe are strong characteristics a chef should hold?
I think the sense of ingredients. It is really important to know which ingredients, their taste, and the balance of flavors will work together well. It helps to make new delicious recipes.
4. What are your career goals over the next five years?
I want to start a blog, and a Youtube channel and write a cookbook under “The Spicy Story” hood with a dream of opening a cozy boho cafe/restaurant in the mountains someday.
5. What would you do if you were cooking and realized that you didn’t have all the ingredients you needed to make a dish?
That happens to me quite often. But when you know your recipes, you also know the substitutes. I usually change the recipe to a different one, if one of the main ingredients is missing. That's the magic of Indian spices and ingredients, there are so many substitutes available, that you can always experiment with the recipes.
6. Can you tell us a little bit about your process for coming up with new ideas when developing recipes?
It's about what people like and can relate to. I work around the same idea and mix and match different popular dishes and create a recipe of my own.
My Childhood memories also push me to develop recipes that my mother and my grandmother use to cook for me. When I travel, I gather a lot of interesting ideas from different parts of India and the world. Those recipes are my all-time favorite and I feel proud looking at them after I have made them myself and posted them on my handle. It feels even better when people on social media re-creates your recipe and acknowledge the output it gives them.
7. Who are your cooking inspirations?
Mothers in general are my inspirations on how they manage to make delicious food for their kids. I have grown up watching my mother and maternal grandmother cooking such delicious and healthy recipes with the simplest of ingredients. And no matter how much I travel and how many cuisines I have tried, the food they cooked for me will always be my favorite.
