It's the unique perspective you bring to your work, your individual way of seeing the world
1. Tell us about your background and journey.
I was born and raised in Vijayawada, where the vibrancy of city life intertwined with my dreams and aspirations. My initial path was carved towards civil services, a journey during which I immersed myself in reading The Hindu newspaper for six years, building my knowledge and understanding of the world. However, life had a different plan for me, which unfolded during an exploratory voyage across Tamil Nadu.
This journey was not just a shift in my career path but a defining chapter of my life. I embarked on a remarkable expedition, spanning 7,000 km on my Royal Enfield, to capture the essence of 149 destinations across Tamil Nadu in just 31 days, armed solely with my phone. This endeavor was a test of endurance, skill, and passion, as I meticulously documented the diverse tapestry of the state.
The pinnacle of this journey was when I was featured in The Hindu, the very newspaper that had been a part of my daily routine for years. This moment was not just a personal triumph but also a proud and prestigious milestone for me and my mother. It symbolized the culmination of my transition from a civil service aspirant to a storyteller who narrates the tales of the land through the lens of a camera. It was a validation of my journey, my struggles, and my newfound identity as 'Mr. Phenomenal Diaries'.
2. What has been your greatest success in cinematography?
My crowning achievement in the realm of cinematography is encapsulated in the Mission South India project, a venture that redefined both the scale and depth of travel photography. This endeavor was not just an assignment; it was my magnum opus that took 12 months of meticulous planning, culminating in a 110-day itinerary to explore the rich tapestry of South India.
In 67 days, I achieved what most would deem formidable. I traversed 13,000 km on my Royal Enfield, capturing the essence of 367 destinations across 92 districts in four states: Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa. The journey was an odyssey of discovery, not just of the diverse landscapes and cultures of South India but also of my capabilities and resilience.
This project was bolstered by strategic brand partnerships with notable names like Rynox Gear, Maximus Pro, Red Bull, Chiiz Photography Magazine, and Tamron, which not only provided support but also added immense value to my work. The magnitude of my undertaking earned me an honorary doctorate from the National Institute of Education and Research (NIER) and (NAU) for the extensive research involved in planning and executing this project.
One of the key outcomes of this journey is the series of books I am working on – 'Explore Kerala', 'Discover Tamil Nadu', and similar guides for Karnataka and Goa. These books are a culmination of my experiences and insights from each state, designed to serve as comprehensive travel guides.
However, the abrupt end of this mission due to the unfortunate demise of my father brought a profound realization – life unfolds in unexpected ways, often while we are busy making other plans. This personal loss brought a new perspective, teaching me the value of each moment and the importance of embracing life's unpredictability.
In essence, the Mission South India project stands as my greatest success, not just in terms of the remarkable achievements and recognitions but also in how it shaped my understanding of life and my craft.
3. What are some of the most important skills for a cinematographer to have?
In the world of cinematography, where each frame is a canvas and every shot a story, certain skills stand paramount. Beyond the mastery of gear and equipment, which indeed plays a role, the essence of true cinematography lies in storytelling, adaptability, and artistic vision.
Storytelling is the heart of cinematography. It's about weaving a narrative through visual elements, creating a connection between the viewer and the subject. The ability to tell a story through images, to evoke emotions and convey messages without words, is what elevates a shot from mere footage to cinematic art.
Adaptability in this field is crucial. During my extensive travels, especially when capturing the diverse landscapes and cultures of South India, I learned to be quick on my feet, making the most of every situation, be it with a high-end camera or just a phone. This flexibility not only enhances your skill set but also opens up a world of creative possibilities. 'Excuses don't win championships,' as I often say, and this attitude has been a key driver in my success.
Artistic Vision is what sets a cinematographer apart. It's the unique perspective you bring to your work, your individual way of seeing the world. This vision is honed over time with practice and exploration. My daily visits to Krishna Barrage, challenging myself to capture the same location in various ways, were exercises in enhancing this vision.
Combining these skills with dedication and continuous learning is what makes for exceptional cinematography. It’s not just about the equipment in your hands but how you use it to bring your vision to life. It's about being receptive to feedback, analyzing your work, and striving to improve one aspect at a time. Ultimately, it's your dedication to the craft and your unique perspective that create compelling stories and memorable visuals.
4. Are there any particular genres that you specialize in shooting?
Indeed, while my journey in travel photography and cinematography spans a broad spectrum of experiences, I specialize in capturing the essence of travel and cultural narratives. My expertise lies in documenting the landscapes, the people, and the myriad of cultures that define a place. This specialization has grown from a deep-rooted passion for exploring the unknown and a desire to tell the stories of the diverse world we live in.
Travel and cultural cinematography allow me to delve into the heart of each destination, uncovering stories that might otherwise remain untold. My work aims to bring viewers closer to the authentic beauty and raw reality of the places I visit, from bustling city streets to serene landscapes. This genre demands a unique sensitivity and an eye for detail, qualities that I have honed over the years through my extensive travels across India, particularly during my ambitious projects like the exploration of South India.
Moreover, this specialization has opened doors to collaborate with various tourism boards and brands, enabling me to showcase destinations in a light that not only attracts viewers but also respects and honors the local culture and environment. It's a genre that offers endless opportunities for creativity and storytelling, and it's where I find my greatest inspiration and satisfaction as a cinematographer.
5. What makes you the best candidate for this job?
My unique blend of passion, experience, and resilience makes me an exceptional candidate for this role. With a background that spans extensive travel photography and cinematography projects, including the ambitious exploration of South India, I bring a wealth of firsthand knowledge and a nuanced perspective to capturing the essence of diverse landscapes and cultures.
My dedication to the craft is evident in my ability to undertake and successfully execute large-scale projects, such as documenting over 367 destinations across four states in just 67 days. This not only showcases my commitment but also my ability to plan meticulously, adapt swiftly to changing environments, and deliver compelling visual narratives under challenging conditions.
Moreover, my work has been recognized and featured in prestigious platforms like The Hindu, and I've had the honor of collaborating with renowned brands and tourism boards. These collaborations have refined my skills in aligning with brand visions while staying true to my artistic integrity. The honorary doctorate I received for my research and contribution to travel photography underscores my dedication to excellence in this field.
The personal trials I've navigated, including overcoming the profound loss of my parents and battling through periods of PTSD and depression, have imbued me with a profound resilience and a deeper understanding of the human experience. These experiences have enriched my storytelling, allowing me to connect with audiences on a more meaningful level.
I essence, my journey is not just about the places I've been or the images I've captured; it's about the stories I've told and the impact they've had. My aim to become the best travel content creator in India, driven by a mission to make my late mother proud and to inspire others to explore and create, sets me apart. I believe my passion, coupled with my professional achievements and personal growth, positions me as the ideal candidate for this job.
6. Which is your favorite book and why?
My favorite book is a tie between 'Atlas Shrugged' and 'The Fountainhead' by Ayn Rand. These novels have profoundly influenced my perspective on life, creativity, and the pursuit of excellence. Rand's exploration of individualism, personal responsibility, and the role of creators in society resonates deeply with me, especially in the context of my journey as a travel photographer and cinematographer.
'Atlas Shrugged' captivates me with its portrayal of a world where the thinkers, innovators, and creators are the unsung heroes driving progress. It challenges me to consider the impact of my work and the importance of staying true to my vision, even in the face of adversity. The book's core message, emphasizing the value of individual achievement and the power of the human spirit, mirrors my own experiences of overcoming personal and professional hurdles to create meaningful work.
'The Fountainhead,' on the other hand, is a compelling narrative about architectural genius Howard Roark, who refuses to conform to traditional expectations. Roark's unwavering dedication to his craft and his principles, despite societal pushback, inspires me to pursue my passion for storytelling through visuals with integrity and authenticity. It's a reminder that true creativity and innovation often require breaking away from the norm and charting one's own course.
Both books by Ayn Rand have shaped my approach to life and work, instilling in me a belief in the power of individual creativity and the pursuit of excellence. They encourage me to continue exploring, capturing, and sharing the stories of the world through my lens, with the conviction that my unique vision can inspire change and bring beauty to the lives of others.
