Joel Thomas Joseph - I Can’t Control Half the Problems Happening in My Life, so Why Bother (Instagram Influencer With 139k Followers)

It's about presenting yourself authentically and transparently

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

Hey there! I'm a regular guy from a South Asian background, growing up and living in the UAE. Right now, I'm in that phase of life where I'm trying to navigate through everything and find my path. One thing I love doing is expressing myself through various forms of art like painting, theater, music, and acting.

I've always had this big dream of becoming a star, you know, living that glamorous life, and I thought, why not start by sharing a glimpse of my journey on social media? So, from my camera to yours, let's embark on this adventure together!

2. What led you to start your page on Instagram and what is it about?

I always knew I wanted to be in front of the glitz and glam and although I haven’t reached my goals quite nearly. One day I just decided to pick up my camera and make a fool out of myself, I mean I’m such a character, it would be selfish of me not to share it with the world and there wasn’t a better timing than during the lockdown, where sharing a little bit of laughter and smiles during a time when it was most needed.

On my page you can expect splices of daily shenanigans from relatable desi content to everyday life and comedic skits. There’s a little something for everyone and if not, I’m also a pretty face as humility is my strongest feat

3. How would you distinguish the term blogger from an influencer?I

I truly believe that what sets us apart as influencers is the connection we build with our audience. When you think about being an "influencer," it's not just about reaching a certain destination, going through a journey, or promoting a product.

It's about presenting yourself authentically and transparently. In essence, you are the brand. People are drawn to your personality, your values, and your story. It's not just about what you do; it's about who you are as a person. That's what makes the relationship between influencers and their followers so special and impactful.

4. Is it financially sustainable to be an influencer today?

In my opinion, I wouldn’t suggest to get into this field thinking about the money. It wouldn’t be advisable nor smart to put social media first from the get-go. Can it suffice down the lane? Sure! But that takes time, some a lot less, some a lot more. Due to the fluidity of this field which may show lucrative results, it’s highly volatile and competitive. So don’t quit your day job just yet!

5. What do you think influences consumer behavior?

It may get a little technical but bare with me, there are four factors that influence consumer behavior in terms of social media and being an influencer.

Brand factor: what it is you’re known for, when people come to your page what are the first few things that remind them of you? It can be your niche, the common faces, brands, products etc. ie: the reason the audience would want to come back to your page.

Personal factor: since we’ve already covered how humble I am, this second point refers to myself, it’s when the influencer is the brand itself. As you share so much of your life, you build a community giving them a sense closeness, relatability and kinship.

Social factor: As much as the media and that’s all of us included, likes to portray this image of “relatability” is what the people want, and there is truth to that but I’d say people mostly like to see what they don’t/can’t/want-to have. The class, gender, relationships, sex appeal and so on are all factors to which consumers are drawn to you

Psychological factors: which contradicts to my earlier statement but hear me out, too much of an impossible reach and a lifestyle so hard to attain will only draw consumers further away from your brand, it’s the sweet spot in between  “if I can do it, you can do it” relatability and content keeping the audience wanting what you have.

6. What is your idea of success or your mantra in life?

That would simply mean to be wealthy. Being wealthy doesn’t not equate to being rich, although that could be a part of it, it also means fruitful relationships, and a sense of fulfillment that no money can buy, putting a smile on the faces of many, including your loved ones. If I can manage to do just that I think that would be success.

And regarding my mantra: “it izz what it izz” I can’t control half the problems happening in my life, so why bother? Let. Things. Happen.

7. How can someone become a successful social media influencer?

Just like any other field, consistency is the key! Not me talking as if I’ve made it as an influencer… there’s still a long way to myself! *I know..very humble*

But love what you do, be consistent, and fake it till you make it! Be delusional all the way!! It got me this far ;)
