Shubira Prasad - Our Epics Are Such That There Are Stories in Stories in Stories (Author of The Kumbh Conspiracy)

While we cannot change our destiny we can certainly make it better.

1.Tell us about your background and journey

It's been a long and fulfilling journey. My husband was in the Air Force. Through his postings we travelled all over the country, mingled with people from the various states of India, learned from them, their culture, their cuisine, their way of living and so many other things. While in the Air Force I became a teacher and later became the principal of one of the Air Force schools. Later when my husband left the Air Force he started a business which led us to many parts of the world. Every state and country was a great experience. I cherish every moment of my travels.

2. In your novel “Angels of Kailash”, what inspired the unique blend of mysticism and reality? Did any personal experiences influence the storyline?

I am very influenced by the Indian epics, be it Ramayan, Mahabharat or the Geeta. Once the thought came to my mind about what happened to the rest of Ravan’s army after Ravan was killed. These demons knew that they would not survive, so they escaped and hid in space, in the ocean and deep inside the Earth too. There they went into hibernation and came out in different centuries to torture and kill humans. Knowing this Bhagwan Ram designated Hanuman ji to train warriors who would demolish these demons as and when they came out of their hibernation. Though the story begins in the time of Ramayan, the actions take place in the twenty first century.

3. As an educationist, how do you believe literature can shape the spiritual growth of young minds?

I feel that education and literature are the two most important factors in shaping the spiritual growth of young minds. Literature teaches the thought process of different people and education hones and refines it.

4. Astrology and literature often explore the unknown. How do you intertwine these two worlds in your writing?

Both astrology and literature tell us about the human race. While literature tells us about the thought process and lives of people, astrology tells us how events take place and how the stars affect people to behave and react in a certain way.

5. Your description as a 'dreamer' suggests a vivid imagination. How do your dreams influence your creative process?

I am a dreamer and a loner and I like it that way. I may or may not have a vivid imagination, but I certainly get carried away by the imaginations of epics and other great books and I get awed by the thoughts of people. Some thoughts stay with me to mull over and arrive at my own conclusions.

6. How do you see the future of astrology in a world that increasingly values science and technology?

Astrology will always have a future, nobody can deny that. But science moves at a breathtaking speed, more stars and universes are discovered taking us nearer or far from them. When we go near these stars, they too begin affecting us. Hence much research has to be done to ascertain the traits of the new stars and their effects on the people of the Earth. In that sense I would advise people to take astrology with a pinch of salt and not totally depend on it.

7. In your view what is the most misunderstood aspect of astrology, and how do you address it in your work?

The most misunderstood aspect of astrology is that many people begin relying on it totally. So if my time is good it will remain good no matter what I do. In the same vein if my time is bad I will not work because nothing good will happen. What we don't realize is that we have to make our good karma in happiness and despair both. I caution my clients about this and try to instill in them that ‘work is worship.’ Prayers too help a lot.

8. Your writings explore deep, spiritual themes. What was the most challenging part of conveying these themes to your readers?

Simple language, small sentences generally and not straying away from the point were some of my dictats to myself. Our epics are such that there are stories in stories in stories. I feel we must stick to one point, explain it to the best of our ability in an interesting and entertaining way.

9. Can you share an instance where a prediction from astrology significantly impacted your life or someone else's?

There are many such incidents. But in my opinion astrology helps in different ways. It helps in finding a good partnership, a good job, money from particular sources and so on. It should be taken as a guide. Things do not happen if we don't work towards them

Our destiny is decided by God depending on our past karmas. While we cannot change our destiny we can certainly make it better. For example being born as a street dog and getting kicked by everybody and being born as a pampered poodle in a rich household. You remain a dog, but your lives are different.

10. If you could rewrite one historical event with an astrological twist, what would it be, and how would it change the course of history?

It will not be called historical but mythological. It is this – Bhagwan Ram banished Sita Mata because one dhobi objected to her returning to Ayodhya. Wasn't she too one of his praja? There are many such questions. I don't think Bhagwan Ram could have done such a thing. I believe in the story that after returning to Ayodhya, after some time they went back to Vaikunth which was their abode.

But if Sita mata had stayed back in Ayodhya, she would have changed the status of women and Ayodhya in general for the better and that would have been the real Ram Rajya.
