1) Tell us more about your role & responsibilities at your college.

I’m pursuing B.el. ed (Bachelors of Elementary Education) from Gargi College (DU) and I’m in 3rd year. Also, I’m a president of the Environmental Society of Gargi College AVNI: The Eco Club. As a president, I have to handle and keep a check on all activities which are happening in AVNI. I am responsible for the completion of all the union tasks. I have to oversee society affairs like workshops, training, etc. More than all of these I have to take care of each and every member and bring all of them together as a family.

2) What's it like to juggle between a leadership role and normal college life?

Sometimes it’s so difficult to handle both sides of college. Although my teachers are so caring and supportive, they encourage us to follow our passion but still, I have faced many problems in balancing both the roles. I remember an incident; I was so busy with some AVNI work and I missed three classes of a particular teacher. When After 3 days I entered her class she literally gave me so negative vibes and some sort of a taunt. Maybe it’s normal for any other student but I was so hurt. I can’t explain that feeling. It was so dark for me. I cried a lot in front of my friend.

She replied “Are you mad? You are crying on this little matter”. Right, it is a little matter, but for you not for me. After that day I am much stronger and do my best to balance my academics and society work. Whenever I need, I ask for help from other union members and my friends without any hesitation because I know anyhow, I have to make it possible and do my best on my both roles.

3) Do you enjoy the kind of influence you hold at such a young age?

Obviously yes, I love being able to share my heart with others and I am grateful that I get to do so.

4) Do you have a message for parents to allow their kids to do things besides academics?

All parents in the world need to understand the passion of their kids and respect them. Allow them to feel joy. According to me, it’s such a horrible relationship if you are ignoring your kid’s happiness and forcing them in academics only. I can’t even imagine this type of relationship with my kids. So, let your kids make a new world for them instead of forcing them to settle in your world.

5) What did you do in your current role that makes you feel really proud of yourself?Recently, AVNI organised a sapling distribution and we requested people to send their plant’s picture to us. The happiness of people while sending that picture was priceless. At that time, I felt really proud of myself and my team.

6) What's your message to encourage students to do internships and attend conferences?

I remember when I was in the first year, I decided I’ll only focus on my studies because I’m an average student, I was not so confident and a silent person. In the last semester of the first year, one of my friends forced me to do an internship. Which was went very well and after that whenever I am free, I keep searching for different internships and I worked with many organisations.

Now, I feel I am very lucky that I have so much experience and I’m so much confident than what I was. It has also helped me in my personality development. I love my current personality so much. So, keep finding opportunities to learn and know more about yourself. Because more people you’ll meet, more you’ll get aware of yourself.
