5 Vital Tips to Ace an Interview

With more and more jobs emerging in the personal relations (PR) sector and the services sector, client dealings are becoming very important, and companies are stressing on how you conduct yourself.  Even if you are someone working in the technical field which requires only statistical analysis or scientific study, still, if you want to climb to higher ranks and become a leader or CEO, the way you portray yourself and handle public dealings will come really in handy.

Doing well in an interview is imperative if you wish to secure a good job for yourself. Let us not forget that you aren't just your CV or a mere piece of paper, but the content you are holding within you. The way you present yourself will hold a lot of impact on the interviewers and determine your selection.

Let’s look at how to prepare for an interview sequentially:

1) Have a smile on your face:

You need to show how self-assured you are about your skills and capacity as a worker. A smile will exude the same. Also, a smile is very contagious and scientific studies show that generally, interviewers try to match the energy levels and comfort level of the people they are interacting with. If you show disinterest or lack of enthusiasm, they too won't want to hold onto you for too long. A smile is the best way of showing keenness and eagerness. It will subtly show your passion and ebullience to be a part of their company.

2) Attitude:

Interviewers are people with a lot of experience, and recruiting is practically their job. So, whatever is in your head is eventually going to unveil itself in front of them. Hence, you need to go with the mindset that you are someone whose knowledge is incomplete and seeks perfection.

Do not hesitate to ask the interviewers the questions you don't have the answers to. You need to exhibit the willingness to learn and grow. Neither an obstinate or stubborn attitude nor arguments to make your points will be of any help in front of them.

At the same time, you need to have full faith in your knowledge. Remember all the intensive research you have done on your work and the amount of time and toil you put into acquiring that knowledge. This will augment your confidence, and you will feel higher self-value. Revise the topics in which your strengths lie and try to correlate the questions being asked to that topic. This will make you answer with greater fervor and zeal.

3) Honesty and integrity:

Believe it or not but honesty and integrity play a major role in determining your success rate in interviews. Think about it yourself, would you ever want to employ a dishonest person who does not function in transparency and is always trying to dupe the organization.

Hence, if you seek a worthy position in an organization with a hefty salary, this is the foremost and most basic expectation the employers have from you. Now, you may ask how is it related to an interview?

The answer is, do not ever lie in an interview. Be as honest and steadfast as possible and see the magic happen. When you don't know the answer to a question just say that you don't know. Neither bluff an answer nor fake an excuse for not knowing the same. Similarly, if you're late for the interview, it is better, to tell the truth rather than come up with a new story every time. Cooking up fables takes a lot of your valuable time as well, while the truth is something always known to you.

To put stories into connection, a lot of time is taken. Believe it or not but the Marvel comics actually took out the alternate universe series when they failed to link one story to the other and readers started to complain very frequently of the contradictions and paradoxes in the story which seemed lame after a point. Hence, it is much simpler and wiser to stick to the truth.

If you couldn't reach on time because you saw a movie till late night and couldn't get up, say it. Don't replace it by saying how you drove your mother to the hospital early morning. They might just find out that you don't have a car and it would put you into an embarrassing situation and the company will reject you straight off.

4) Etiquette:

Your etiquettes resonate your personality. Hence, you must observant of basic ethics during interviews which are easily forgotten in an informal set-up. Some of the common etiquettes are:

a) Always ask before coming in.

b) Never put your elbows on the table. They should never be shown to the interviewer as well.

c) Never speak out of turn or interrupt the interviewer. If need be, then use phrases like 'excuse me' or 'please sir, may I answer'.

d) Never adjust your hair, tie, shirt tucking or cuff-links in front of the interviewers. It shows unpreparedness and casualty.

e) Shoe-laces should be tied and all documents should be put in place beforehand. Do not scramble for things in front of the interviewers.

f) Adhere to the dress code and keep it clean. Do not emanate an untidy or unkempt appearance.

5) Ask for a review

You won’t believe how much value people add to their opinions, and if you take their opinions and suggestions you come into their good books automatically. At the end of your interview, when the interviewers ask you to pack your bag and leave, you ask, “Sir, where do you think I could have done better?” This small gesture of yours could really move mountains within them. It shows your fervor to learn and grow whereas it also subtly indicates your humility as a person. This question reveals that you accept that there are flaws within you and also shows that you do feel you could learn something from the person in front of you. The interviewers, being people of experience, will catch the notice of it and will favor you when it comes to the final shortlisting.

The aforementioned tips will help you ace an interview and leave a good impression on your employer. In the end, what is most important is your belief in yourself. If you trust yourself, you will conquer all your wishes and emerge victoriously.
