1.Tell us more about your background and journey.

My musical journey started at the age of three. It was my mother who was my first teacher of singing. After completing my school from a small town of North 24 Parganas in West Bengal, it was my craving for music that made me leave my hometown. Going against all odds and after convincing my parents, I set my foot for Kolkata all alone to pursue my musical dreams.

My path of music has different chapters. Eventually, I have been under the tutelage of many respectable music teachers and I even pursued and completed my studies with Masters in Vocal Music from Rabindra Bharati University.

I participated in Music Reality shows in Television like ZeeTV Saregamapa and Zee Bangla Saregamapa, ETV Taraana. After that I aspired and put my eyes on carving a place in playback singing in Bengali Film industry.

Subsequently after numerous jingles, TV recordings finally I received my first playback break in a Bengali film, Baranda starring Rituparna Sengupta and Bratya Basu where I sang “Ektu Khola Hawa”.

The song was well appreciated and since then eventually I started treading the path of Bengali film music as well as Bangladesh film music. I have done playback for Bengali films, web series, TV series, music albums and for Bangladesh film and Television.

My most successful playback “Shudhu Tui” from the Bengali film “Villain” under the production banner SVF received nomination in Mirchi Music Bangla Awards. This song earned me tons of accolades, love and views in social media.

My debut playback in Bollywood happened in the movie “Chase” with music release from Zee Music. Apart from that simultaneously I have been doing live concerts as a live stage performer, all over India, Bangladesh and USA.

2. When did you first decide you wanted to pursue music and how did you start?

Well music has always been like the pulse of my life. Since childhood I have grown up listening to legendary singers like Asha Bhonsle, Lata Mangeshkar, Geeta Dutt, Shreya Ghosal, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. I aspired to see myself close to them and so I always use to motivate myself that one day I will also sing, and people will hear and love my voice.

After participating in the reality shows, there was a time when a complete uncertainty occupied my life. I was not finding any clue about how to proceed further, what to do next, how to get close to the bouquet of dreams that I have always nurtured in my heart.

However, I decided to gather myself up, composed myself and focused on the quest to pursue my dreams. I determined that I will become a successful singer and performer and that will be the only bull’s eye of my life.

Hence from the moment of this decision, I started taking musical lessons again, listened to various kinds of music, tried recording sessions of different kinds, went to various music composers and left no stones unturned. I started recording demo and scratch of songs for music directors which they used to send to main playback artists and production houses and started doing live shows.

During my early days of career, social media was not that much the talk of the town. Hence initially it was a challenging and difficult situation, but I continued to move forward and gradually gathered momentum in the musical journey.

3. Who is your favorite artist and why?

As earlier mentioned, throughout my continuing musical journey, I have been inspired and motivated by many acclaimed and legendary singers and musicians. It is very difficult to mention a single name.

Apart from being an ardent musician, I am also a sincere learner who learns from every artist that I come across in my life. However, to name a few from a lot, the first name that comes in my mind is legendary Asha Bhonsle. It was her voice and versatility that really inspired me in the world of singing.

I grew up learning and listening to her getting inspired every moment. The second name will be Celine Dion whose soulful voice just drives me crazy! Her vocal range, her tone, her modulations and her overall singing is a treasure box to me that I crave to discover every inch.

4. Can you throw some light on opportunities one gets as a singer?

When I started, opportunities were less, and challenges were more. One has to cross many hurdles to make her voice audible to the listeners. With the passage of time and a great boom in social media however now it is comparably easier to reach to the listeners with your voice.

You can sing and post your song and it can virtually reach to the audience with the help of a single click. Also, with up-gradation and advancement, there have been more avenues and genres that are opening for the singers to showcase and present their talents.

Although the challenges to shine and prosper still remains and so is the quest for existence, opportunities if rightly used can definitely open fruitful doors for singers. Playback singing, jingles, music albums for social media, singles, OTT platforms, live concerts comprises the potential list of opportunities.

Although the recent pandemic has put a setback in the performing arts field specially music but with the help of social media, things have taken a different turn giving birth to new opportunities. I am an optimistic person and I always believe that good things will always prevail sooner or later.

5. Is formal training required or can one train themselves purely on the basis of talent?

I think talent is just like a mound of clay and to get it in proper shape, formal training is required. One may have immense talent but formal training polishes and nurtures the talent quotient that will help in the long run. So, one must be confident about their talent and channelize the talent in true avenues through formal training. I myself have benefited from formal training.

6.What piece of advice would you like to give to future and aspiring artists?

Well, have faith in yourself, your music and most importantly be very patient. Learn your music, listen to different kind of songs. Being a singer, it is very essential to learn and sing various kind of songs and practice your music lessons a lot.

Also try to sing in microphone and record what you are singing which in turn will help you to know your voice. Study and gather information about recording sessions, and if you get a chance to work in a recording studio just grab it. And lastly do not stop dreaming and believe in your dreams.

7. Which is your favorite book and why?

“A burning sense of passion is the most potent fuel for your dreams.”- This is one of the most inspiring quotes that I have followed in my life and it is from one of my most favorite book- "The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari" by Robin Sharma.
Although, I am not much of a bookworm, I came across this book during my university days.

The book has been a driving force of stimulation in my life, my goals and my dreams. It talks about the quests of introspection, to understand and pursue your goals and how to discipline your life to optimism so that one can attain his utmost goals. Really inspiring!
