1.Tell us more about your background and journey.
I started singing and performing at around 7 years old! I was a fairly loud child, so I think mum and dad were trying to find an outlet for me to get it out of my system.
The passion hasn’t stopped since! I continued singing, dance, and drama lessons all throughout my schooling, and once I reached the age of 16 I flew to Sydney to work with some amazing industry professionals. This really sparked a fire, and from that moment on I was so sure of what I wanted to do for the rest of my life!
Since then, I’ve trained with so many people and methods and have developed my own unique perspective on the music industry. I have been teaching for around five years and I absolutely love it.
I’ve just opened my own studio in Ballarat, VIC, AUS - called SoundCheck Studios whilst also studying a Bachelor of Music at Victoria University.
2. When did you first decide you wanted to pursue music and how did you start?
I definitely have always loved it. I’ve tried so many different hobbies and jobs and this is the one passion that has never left me. I started performing gigs in high school and built my confidence until I graduated.
I then sent a million resumes out to music schools in my area and landed a job teaching at a performing arts school. Since then, I’ve never looked back!
3. Who is your favorite artist and why?
I have a deep appreciation for Ariana Grande. I feel like I’ve watched her find herself and grow up over the years and I’ve been parallel to that. I love the journey that her music has gone through, and I love her views on women in the industry and how she always stands up for what she believes in.
I’ve also watched her go through the Manchester attack and Mac Miller passing away, and still seen her rise up afterward and continue to do what she loves. Everything she has been through really inspires me.
4. Can you throw some light on opportunities one gets as a singer?
I think the best thing that comes with singing and performing is the confidence you get as a side effect, not only while on stage but also in your everyday life. I’ve watched students with anxiety become more comfortable in social situations, and feel more self-assured in their bodies over time.
The way music manages mental health is amazing, and I think everyone should have some training in the arts - whether its music, dance, drama.. anything performance-related. The life skills it gives you are second to none.
5. Is formal training required or can one train themselves purely on the basis of talent?
If you want to pursue this as a career, you need to work hard. And that means getting some training. Natural talent can only get you so far. You don’t have the same understanding of your body or even music terminology without some professional training.
Set yourself up for success, and enroll in some classes - or even just educate yourself online! There’s so much free content out there to immerse yourself in. If you love it enough, it won’t feel like work!
6. What piece of advice would you like to give to future and aspiring artists?
Support other artists that are working to achieve their dreams. I really don’t believe in competing against others in this industry. There is no-one out there that is like you, so it doesn’t make sense to compare yourself to anyone! Create a network of people that lift you up, and do the same in return. Good vibes only!!
7. Which is your favorite book and why?
I love the book “Mastering Your Mean Girl” by Melissa Ambrosini. It’s all about taming that little voice in your head that tells you, you aren’t enough. Learn to remove yourself from your ego and rise above it! Check it out :)
