Introduction:

In times easy accessibility of most of the things has made our life comfortable. Yet, just like the two sides of an equivalent coin it has also brought in its many challenges.

 One of the issues afflicting most Nations of the planet is nothing but drug abuse. It is a social evil which can destroy the very vital or essence of the society.

It can make our country weak and hollow because it nibbles or destroy gradually and slowly at the standard of human resource of a country. It is actually a disease more dangerous than drinking.

Causes:

Today, there is an alarming increase of drug abuse in schools and colleges. Drugs such as cocaine, heroin, LSD, hash, crack, opium, marijuana are taken for their stimulating and relaxing qualities, little realizing, that this misadventure can lead to addiction- a trap from which it is difficult to get out.

Initially, these drugs may give you kicks but ultimately it becomes a thread to the addict’s life. A drug called ‘ecstasy’ can kill a person in one hit.

Effects of drugs:

Addiction to drugs of any kind even alcohol, painkiller or tranquilizers can develop suicidal tendencies, affecting a person’s mind, moods, emotions and feelings.

They are also responsible for making drug abusers, take to a life of crime, violence and aggression. A man becomes pathetic because under the influence of drugs he is unable to regulate or control his thoughts and actions.

Harms:

Not only do they create themselves a laughing stock but their performance also becomes impaired or corrupt. They become a liability rather than becoming useful members of the society.

Physical and mental harm caused to them is irreparable as breaking this habit requires tons of determination, courage and patience. The beginning process of coming out of it is extremely painful because it involves frequent tremble and pain.

Addicts cannot functions as normal members of the society. They neglect and abuse their families who also are traumatized. Not only this, it is one of the root causes for encouraging crimes.

Drugs and crimes:

Criminal gangs and Mafia underworlds flourish with the money from drugs requiring countries to spend heavily on polish resources, for getting the information of such crimes likes smuggling and dealing in drugs.

Effects on India:

According to official figures, India has about 7.5 Crore drug addicts and the number is going up significantly, especially in semi-urban and backward areas. The monthly drug sales in India varies between rupees 100 crore to 125 crore.

The danger from drugs can’t be ignored due to the multiple problems which Indian societies and communities face. It is a way greater problem than disease and poverty.

It removes the nation of its manhood, eliminating the social evil may appear to its impossible; still steps are often taken to weaken the hold of drugs on society.

The use of illicit and prohibited drugs today is not just confined to street urchins and lower classes, but is fast spreading to middle and upper class youths of the society.

Measures taken:

Comprehensive strategy involving specific schemes to bring about an overall reduction in the use of drugs that has been evolved by various government agencies and NGO’s and is further supplemented by measure like education, counselling, treatment and rehabilitation programs.

Media role against this:

Media too has been doing its bit to tackle this problem. To spread mass awareness, there are repeated advertisements on TV showing the root cause of cancer being smoking or usage of tobacco.

Aamir Khan’s television show “Satyamev Jayate” also dealt with concept of alcoholism among Indians, especially the youth. This show has emerged a point of concern among the Indians regarding the social evils such as alcohol and drugs.

It came out with a brilliant example of reputed lyricist Jived Akhtar, who confessed his obsession for alcohol had for almost 27 years. Such kind of programs and short stories will play a significant role in spreading awareness among the youth and teenagers.

Education and training about this:

This menace and danger of drugs can be tackled by educating children at home and in school about drugs. They need to be made conscious of the ill effects of drugs so that they can make a conscious decision of avoiding this problem.

It is a common knowledge that very often young children get in to this habit because of this influence of their friends and the desire to become a part of the so called fashionable, liberal and modern society.

Thus, youth has got to be trained to make the right choices, learn to resist temptations and not succumb and transit to peer pressure – all this boils right down to the responsibilities of parents and schools to lay a strong foundation of ethical character and discipline among the teenagers and youths.
