Geena Davis is an
American actor, advocate, executive producer and a former model. She has
received many awards for her work which includes Academy Award, Golden Globe
Award and Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2019, for the work that she has
done to fight gender bias. She has also been nominated for BAFTA Award and
Primetime Emmy Award.
Davis’s married life began
on 25th March 1981 with Richard Emmolo, but they separated in 1983
and got divorced in 1984. She met Jeff Goldblum on the set of Transylvania an
got married to him in 1987 but her second marriage also ended up in divorce in
1991. After five months of courtship, she gave third chance to marriage when
she married a filmmaker Renny Harlin on September 18, 1993. Unfortunately,
third time is not always a charm and she ended her marriage when she found out
that her personal assistant’s child is fathered by Harlin. She filed for the
divorce and it got finalized in the year 1998.
Davis’s fourth marriage have always been in questions. In
2006, when she sat for a long Q&A session with Oprah Winfrey, questions
about her marriage with an Iranian-American neurosurgeon Reza Jarrahy, who is
15 years younger than her were put up.
She shared that both of them “hit it off” when they met
in 1999 through their common friends. She did not accept in the interview with
Oprah Winfrey that she was actually married to Jarrahy and said that they just
used to joke around about him being her fourth husband and that there was
nothing serious about it.
But when in a deposition, Jarrahy raised a question in
front of Davis that in an interview with Winfrey she bragged about her marriage
with Reza, she couldn’t say no and accepted that it was true that she said
these words and lied to Winfrey about her fourth marriage. She said that there
were some specific circumstances of September 2001 that made her do this.
There were many reports regarding the marriage of Reza
and Geena. The couple has a daughter and twin sons. They both have always
gushed about their marriage and have been seen in many media photos together.
They talked about their marriage while saying how happy they are and how much
they look forward to spend their lives together.
In May 2018, Jarrahy filed for the divorce due to some
conflicting views after they got separated in 2017. The twist in the situation
entered when Davis said that she did not want a divorce as they were not
legally married in the first place. They had a marriage-like ceremony willingly
but they always knew that it isn’t legally binding.
To prove her statement, she presented evidences to prove
that they were never married. She presented the evidences regarding their
checks as “single” on tax returns and that they do not have any joint checking
or saving account, do not own a property together as a couple and Jarrahy
couldn’t even receive a health insurance through her SAG-AFTRA membership as it
requires one to qualify as a family member, which Jarrahy never was.
Even after the evidences presented in the court, Jarrahy
stayed assertive on the fact that they actually were married and showed his
concerned about his children being called “illegitimate”. It was also reported
that if the court sides with Davis and says that there was no marriage then
there wouldn’t be any division of properties and Jarrahy won’t be able to apply
for the spousal support.
This is brings us to the end of a series of marriages of
Geena, or at least the ones until 2021! A topic much discussed and gossiped
amongst her fans but indeed matter of concern for Geena herself.
