Rustam Maharramov - Sometimes I Just Want To Freeze That Moment And Keep Watching (Nature and Lifestyle Photographer/ Filmmaker from Azerbaijan)

For nearly about 5 years I am traveling as a photographer. I find myself in wild nature photography. Living these moments looks like filling my soul especially when I see animals or birds. Sometimes I just want to freeze that moment and keep watching.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I was born in Guba from Azerbaijan. One of the beautiful countries of Caucasus. Here we don't have big landscapes but we have very good biodiversity. This biodiversity is my inspiration for photography.

For me photography is not just taking moment it is also catching the soul of nature. After you came home and starting look at your photos you realized that something is filling your heart. It's warm and pleasurable. That's my journey.

2. How and when did you realize your passion for photography?

It all started when I was 8 years old with a camera that my father gave me. I had a serious interest in nature and living things. Unfortunately, in those days it was not always possible to take pictures because the cameras were filmed, which made the number of photos valuable.

I took photos in my city and village for nearly 4 years. When I was 10, this time my father gave me a video camera, and I started to film everything I saw. I sat and watched the spider for hours, trying to catch it with its prey. Unfortunately after 12, I gave all my energy to education and moved away from photography.

After a 15-year silence, I was broke my silence on a business trip to Canada, and I started to shoot again at 27 years old. I think my love of photography has passed from my father because he loves to be in nature nearly all the time.

3. What are some tips you would like to share with amateur photographers?

Three very simple things. 1st is passion, you should want, but without ego. 2nd is inexpensive equipment, no need expensive equipment. Even mobile phones are your friend these days. And 3rd is continue to shoot and be patient, over time the result will amaze you.

4. What are the important skills one should have to be a successful photographer?

Some people are born with the gift and they are so talented but most people don't. In my opinion, everything is coming from passion. With the right tools (patient, hard work, support) passion can show you the true art.

5. What are various opportunities available for aspiring photographers?

I think it depends on where are you living and what is your society's opinion. In some countries nature giving you everything, some country very historical and in some country, these are not important.

Examples society giving value to wedding photography, like my country. It's hard to see opportunities for what you like. So it will be nice to analyze opportunities.

6. What extra skills are required for wildlife photography?

Wildlife photography is a little different from the others. You need good equipment for caching quick moments and a lot of patience to wait. It's between you and mother nature. Sometimes I waited more than 3 hours and came back with zero photos. But sometimes the miracle happening at the moment you arrived area.

7. What is your long term plan/ future plans?

2020 and pandemic canceled all my plans. In 2021 I want to go to Europe especially Finland for wildlife. But who knows what is waiting for us?

8. Which is your favorite book and why?

The Lord Of Rings. All books. I think it's coming from the adventure of the books. Not only adventure but also the nature of Middle-earth and traveling with friends. The landscape of New Zealand is amazing.
