6 Ways to Improve Decision Making

As a businessman, making difficult decisions is an essential part of day-to-day
operation. The decision you take has a significant impact on your organization, so
you must choose the best out of all possible alternatives. It is more difficult to do than to talk about, and it requires a lot of effort while making rational choices and then trying to avoid losses or potential pitfalls.

Also we cannot make the right decision all the time. But we can try to develop the ability to make effective choices. For that, you can refer to these four important tips:

1. Encourage Employee Involvement in Decision Making

Collaboration and participation mean more than just giving a right to vote on what the team is going to do. They mean team members have a right to give suggestions and they are listened to and they actively participate in every decision making of the company. Effective leaders are open-minded they listen to their employee's voices and also actively seek their input.

2. Don’t apply the Bureaucratic Approach. Deter “My way or the             Highway.”

In bureaucratic decision making, the top-down approach is followed where leaders make every decision and team members need to follow the same without any question.

No suggestions, inputs or feedback is taken from team members. This
approach may increase efficiency in the short term but in the long run, it hurt the
creativity between team members.

3. Don't take too long to make decisions. Deter "analysis paralysis"

When the process of decision making is too long and at the same time too many
options are evaluated in-depth. In this situation group, creativity may high at the
initial phase but as the process goes further the creativity decreases as the process take too much time and it will be also expensive.

4. Identity resources needed and obstacles to achieve the goal

An effective manager must be informed of needed resources and unnecessary
hurdles in the decision-making process, then use the hiring process and employee skill training to fulfil the required need.

5. Encourage Employees

Sometimes mere recognition and encouragement from leader to employee for the
work done by him or for his attitude or his skills leads to develop that person into a collaborative member of the team.

6. Use different Management Technique

The process of decision making becomes very cumbersome. In order to evaluate
certain techniques have been developed which facilitates rational decision making. Techniques like brainstorming, nominal group technique and quality circle may come into effect.

Conclusion

There should be a balance between the leader's creativity and group creativity and it is necessary for decision making. Balancing creativity satisfies the employees and optimize the process. This is how good team decisions are made.
