Book Review - Shatter Me: Journey In a Dystopian Society

Shatter Me is a novel written by Tahereh Mafi about a girl "Juliette" who can hurt and kill someone with her touch. Juliette's locked for murder, and the government wants to use her power as a weapon. What inspired Tahereh to write this kind of novel? And does it represent the world we live in nowadays regarding corruption and control?

The Setting

Shatter Me starts with a small room with one window, four walls, and 144 square feet. Juliette yearns to touch other people, talk to them, and make contact with them, but her touch is lethal. She stays alone until a boy from the past walks in. Juliette doesn't remember Adam is from her past until she gets to know him. Moreover, he helps her to gain her confidence and escape the Reestablishment.

You Always Get Back to Who You Are!

Shatter Me is a story about Juliette who tries to find herself, and inside that cell, she tries to understand her power and what it all means to her. Moreover, Juliette tries to be herself in a society that controls her and controls who to be. And honestly, I loved how everything developed in her nature.

Tahereh Mafi's Style

I can say that Mafi's style is full of action and romance, but she was clever by including the chaos of Juliette's mind. It means that Juliette's thoughts are like a hurricane, and you can see it in the pages of the book when she talks to herself a lot. And sometimes, she questions herself, her thoughts, and feelings.

The isolation of Juliette and not knowing how to express herself caused her to lose her confidence in herself, but later on, she finds a way to stay on track.

A Dystopian Novel!

Shatter Me is a dystopian novel that will make your heart melts with the romance between two characters, Adam and Juliette. It will make you feel her through her journey that starts alone. And The novel made me think differently about corruption and chaos caused by governments.

However, the series is well written and takes a creative viewpoint on the superpowers. Furthermore, the dystopian world represents our world nowadays in some countries that have a corrupt government.

I can relate to some of Juliette's feelings about her understanding herself, finding herself through that, and the way she keeps reminding herself of who she is. Besides, the book is easy to read and available, so give it a shot!

In The End

While reading Shatter Me, I had so many feelings. And those feelings were different in each part, starting from happiness, sadness, pride, and love. I admire Tahereh Mafi for putting this mix because it teaches us how to live in the moment. Moreover, how to be strong through tough times.

I also felt that she included a developed human nature through characters, which is intentional but clever. You'll have fun if you read it, and it can give you a hint on the details of how many countries run their governments through control and corruption.

Governments put their needs over everything else, and it doesn't matter to them who gets hurt in the way. And I can say that such governments and societies feed on injustice and murder.
