Emily Monahan - I Didn’t Need the Inspiration to Work Hard, It Felt Like a Chance to Truly Make a Difference (Nurse Practioner From USA)

Emily Monahan

Being a physician assistant is a wonderful career. You have the lateral mobility to change specialties when or if you need to. You also are a huge and influential member of the medical community.

1. Tell us about your upbringing, background, and journey?

I grew up in a small town in Iowa.  I lived in a home with my mom, dad, and brother.  In my small town, I also had my extended family on both sides with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. I think the small-town mentality of giving back and helping one another instilled in me the desire to work in healthcare.

My parents were always huge supporters of anything I wanted to do, but we’re also strict enough to keep me safe. I am very fortunate and grateful for my upbringing.

2. Why did you choose to be a caregiver and what qualities do you think one needs to do so?

From the age of 3, I knew I wanted to work in medicine. I told my parents I wanted to be a doctor by day and a ballerina by night. Although I changed career paths a few times, it was always within medicine.  I think the most important qualities to have as caregiving is emotional intelligence and empathy.

3. We salute your work during the pandemic, where did you get the inspiration to work so hard?

For me I didn’t need the inspiration to work hard, it felt like a chance to truly make a difference.

4. What is your message for encouraging more people to take up this profession and the younger generation?

Being a physician assistant is a wonderful career. You have the lateral mobility to change specialties when or if you need to. You also are a huge and influential member of the medical community.

5. What does your typical day look like and what do you like to do besides work?

My days vary from day to day and week to week. I’m either in the clinic, surgery, or a combo day with both!  When I’m not working, I enjoy beach volleyball, anything in the sun, and traveling near and far!
