Source - Prime Video

Il Signor Diavolo or Mr. Devil is a 2019 Italian mystery horror feature film about a bizarre case of a young boy who has murdered one of his peers whom he claims was the devil.

Introduction

Original title - Il Signor Diavolo (2019)

Directed by - Pupi Avati

Genre - fiction

Cast - Gabriel Lo Giudice, Gianni Cavina, Alessandro Haber, Lino Capolicchio, Massimo Bonetti, Chiara Caselli, Eva Grimaldi, Enrico Salimbeni, Fabio Ferrari, Chiara Sani

Plot - Spoiler Alert!

1976’s “The House with Laughing Windows” and 1983’s “Zeder” is the best creation of Avati which crowned him as a master of Italian Giallo horror-thriller cinema.

Produced by Duea Films and Rai Cinema the film starred Gabriel Lo Giudice and Alessandro Haber, and framed as a tribute to horror classics from the ‘70s and ‘80s, Avati’s own novel is adapted in “Il Signor Daivalo”.

Set in 1950s Italy, Carlo is a 14 years old boy, who kills Emilio, a special needs ward of the local priest. It received a Cannes Film Market screening on Sunday.

Wide, who was a well-known sales agent, has moved into production. It brought two productions onto the Cannes market: “Negative Numbers,” which received a personal market screening, and the upcoming “Blast.”

About the Movie

A fourteen-year-old boy, Carlo, killed Emilio in the 1950s in Italy. Emilio was a disabled guy hosted by the local priest. The Italian Ministry of Interior wanted clarification of what happened. The relation between the church and the political institutions is tense.

The Church needs to be protected by the ruling Christian party to keep its power. The young murderer Carlo talks about the Devil and accuses a nun of instigating him to kill his victim, Emilio.

Carlo believes that Emilio caused the death of Carlo’s best friend, two years earlier, namely Paolino. Carlo wants to bring Paolino back from the land of the dead. By trying to do so, Carlo kills Emilio thinking he is an incarnation of the devil.

Personal Verdict

I was really looking forward to seeing this as I'm a fan of Avati but overall it was disappointing. There was the germ of an idea here about superstition, religion, ritual, and devilry but none of it was ever fully developed.

Generally, it had the air of a cheap made-for-TV special (it might actually have made a nice Netflix-style miniseries), and when your setting is as atmospheric as the damp foggy plains of the Veneto there really is no need to spoil it with those awful Instagram-filter style colors.

Superficial and discounted. Terrible acting, elementary history, and meaning none. As a mysterious film, there is no tension, as a horror film, there is no terror. Alessandro Haber and Andrea Roncato make small cameos: Haber is fine but does not shine as usual; Roncato, compared to the protagonists, looks like an Oscar-winning actor.

In a peasant context, in 1952, they still go around with oil lamps, but they also have many vans and cars, even the father of the little protagonist. Completely unreal: they were very poor, at most they could afford a cart pulled by a mule.

The Bottom Line

Having a huge expectation it really doesn't go up to the mark and yet there are some good things about the movie but the bad parts get highlighted the most and especially the theme on the way is and every dialogue is told with.

So for a new type of experience you can go and watch this movie but to be honest it is kind of a waste of time rather than seeing something innovative.

My ratings for the movie - 2.5 on 5
