Book Summary
Oliver is a privileged youngster, the son of a prominent family that dates back many generations. Jennifer is the sole child of a widowed baker, and she is the polar opposite of Oliver. Their marriage, on the other hand, is one of power and volatility that takes them both up in an uncontrollable wave, their love surviving all but one obstacle: mortality. The twentieth-century version of Romeo and Juliet is Love Story.
On the Radcliffe campus, Oliver meets Jennifer in the library. This library, rather than the one at Harvard, Oliver favors since the needed reading material is considerably easier to acquire. Jennifer, the clerk on duty that fateful night, however, disagrees with Oliver's tastes and feels free to express her dissatisfaction. This meeting leads to coffee, which leads to a date to see Oliver play hockey.
While Oliver tries to persuade himself that he dislikes this opinionated girl who has no idea who he is or how prominent his family is, Jennifer tries to persuade Oliver that she could care less about his family or his remarkable athletic talents. But neither of them is very successful at persuading the other of anything other than their enjoyment of spending time together.
It doesn't take long for Oliver and Jennifer to spend all of their free time together. Oliver has a strange feeling about Jennifer, and he's scared to use his usual lines on her because he's worried she'll see right through him. Jennifer is unique. Oliver does not have the same expectations of her that he does of other females. It doesn't take Oliver long to discover how deeply he feels for this girl.
Oliver has a difficult connection with his father because he believes he will never be able to match his father's achievements. When Oliver takes Jenny to meet his parents, Jenny notices this. Oliver's father soon tells him that if he marries Jenny, he would lose his share of the family money. This statement, Oliver interprets as the end of the relationship he has been waiting for. Oliver marries Jenny and sets off on his own, away from the Barrett dynasty.
For the three years that Oliver is in law school, Oliver and Jennifer rely on Jennifer's salary. Throughout this period, Oliver and Jennifer come up with new methods to scavenge every day, stretching every money. Oliver's father tries to make up by asking Jennifer and Oliver for his sixty-first birthday celebration, but Oliver declines.
Jennifer fights with Oliver over his decision until he bursts and smashes the phone across the room. Jennifer flees out of the apartment, and Oliver spends the rest of the night looking for her, eventually finding her at the top of their flat's stairs.
Oliver receives several employments offers after graduating from law school. Finally, Oliver takes a position with a New York City legal firm, where he will earn a record salary for a Harvard Law School graduate. Jennifer and Oliver are making the most of their newfound money by purchasing all of the luxuries they were unable to afford when living on Jennifer's teaching income.
Jennifer and Oliver make the decision to start a family. When Jennifer does not conceive straight away, they consult a fertility specialist to rule out any issues. During this study, the doctor learns that Jennifer has deadly leukemia. Oliver initially refuses to inform Jennifer, trying to keep things as normal as possible. Jennifer, on the other hand, is aware that something is wrong with her and seeks medical help, requesting that the doctor give her the truth.
Jennifer becomes so unwell in a few weeks that she accepts to be admitted to the hospital. Oliver quits his job and prefers to stay at Jennifer's side as often as she allows. Oliver wants Jennifer to have all she requires, so he approaches his father and requests $5,000 without explaining why.
Jennifer's health is rapidly deteriorating. Just before she dies, Jennifer makes Oliver swear that he will enable her father to have a Catholic burial for her. Oliver discovers his father racing towards the hospital following his wife's death. Oliver's father has arrived to support his son after learning about Jennifer's sickness.
For the first time since he was a little boy, Oliver allows himself to be consoled in his father's arms.
