Veidehi Gite - I Typically Work 18-20 Hours a Day Managing Different Roles (Travel Blogger, India)

I quit 16-years of my corporate career in 2016 to take up my love for travelling, and the rest is history

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I quit 16-years of my corporate career in 2016 to take up my love for travelling, and the rest is history. What initially began as a travel adventure with the family eventually turned into a quest of solo journeys.

In August 2016, I took a trip to Scandinavia, exploring the five happiest countries in the world, inspiring me to launch Krazy Butterfly, a journal for curious travellers.

A year after launching Krazy Butterfly, I began to receive invites from tourism boards and hospitality partners and that, right there, marked the beginning of my professional career as a full-time travel blogger and influencer.

2. What do you love most about travelling?

Initially, when I'd started travelling, I loved staying at luxury hotels, experimenting with different types of cuisines and getting to see prominent landmarks across the world.

That, however, has changed in the last few years as now I am more fond of meeting and forming a bond with people from different cultures, and my love for landmarks has transformed into a fondness for art and heritage. I am constantly evolving as a traveller and have begun to notice things I didn't earlier.

Nowadays, staying at luxury resorts doesn't excite me as much as observing a new plant species, engaging with animals, a smiling face of a complete stranger or anything that makes me feel deeply. Let's just say that the traveller in me has managed to escape materialism to find greater happiness.

3. Are you someone who likes to take control of the wheel or stay back whilst enjoying the scenic vistas?

Well, I don’t drive. It’s not my thing, so I mostly sit back and enjoy the scenic vistas. It allows me to focus on photography and other elements that I take note of, while I’m travelling around.

4. What's your favourite place so far?

Of all the countries I have travelled to, Norway, hands down, is my favourite destination so far. Norway is Zen in its own glory, and it introduced me to some of the most compassionate people I have met and some of the most gorgeous natural reserves I have seen.

5. What place is top of your bucket list right now?

I would love to visit Iceland in the near future and spend a few nights basking beneath the splendid northern lights. Or Peru, for all its alien connections.

6. What can't you travel without?

Sports shoes, comfortable clothing and a sturdy handbag to hold all my digital pieces of equipment.

7. Do you prefer solo travel or with someone else?

I usually prefer to travel solo as it allows me to make memories that are unique to me, however, lately, I have been taking a lot of press trips and I have met some very wonderful people along the way.

But solo travelling has perks that make you independent, multi-tasker, mindful, confident and most importantly, every solo trip is good for your soul as it's ultimately a voyage to your inner self.

8. What is the common misconception people have about what you do?

I think the common misconception people have about what I do is that I must come from a privileged background to be indulging in such luxurious vacations. Travel writing is neither easy nor as glamorous as people perceive it to be.

I typically work 18-20 hours a day managing different roles, be it writing, photography, website or social media management, or taking long trips that require me to travel at odd times, spend countless hours in transit and being a woman, to be aware of my surroundings round the clock.

What you see on my feed is not what it is! It takes a lot of hard work and countless sleepless nights to build a travel profile.

9. For a complete outsider with inroads, what advice would you like to give?

I'd say, research well to choose the right destination and associated landmarks, compare accommodation and travel options before booking, get travel insurance and be mindful of your surroundings while you are on the go.

You can avoid many problems by simply being aware and by trusting your intuition.

10. What are the best road trips you have taken across the country?

I think some of the best road trips I have taken across India are through Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.

The road trips across Gujarat introduced me to its rich cultural diversity, handcrafted items and some delicious local cuisine while the countryside around Himachal Pradesh was a complete contrast full of mountain rides through some incredible forests and modest villages.

Internationally, some of the best road trips I have taken are those across European and Sri Lankan countryside.

11. Which is your favourite book and why?

The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield is my favourite book as it changed my life to a large extent. It's a beautiful mix of travelling and spirituality: the book that makes you question everything in and around you. Read it, if you haven't already!
