Movie Review: ‘The Hot Chick’- A Hot Teenage Mess

Credits: IMDb

The movie is about a teenage girl named Jessica, a pretty creation with the meanest attitude. Often, she’d discredit the feelings of others around her to pump herself up. However, she soon realises her fault when things begin to ramble up as her body gets swapped with a not-so-good-looking criminal due to a pair of magical earrings.

Introduction

Movie Name: The Hot Chick

Director’s Name: Tom Brady

Genre: Comedy/Teen

Language: English (US)

Synopsis- Spoiler Alert!

The movie revolves around a mean teenage girl, Jessica played by Rachel McAdams whose body gets swapped with a local thief due to a pair of magical earrings. Jessica loves herself dearly and thinks everyone around her likes her. Although that’s not the case as she projects mean behaviour towards her peers and wings it off as something funny.

So Jessica steals a pair of earrings from an antique shop in a mall which is supposedly enchanted with a spell. As the movie proceeds, the local thief, played by Rob Schneider gets hold of one of the stolen earrings, wears them and during the course of the night, their bodies get swapped with their souls in place.

Jessica was in shock and absolute denial. As the movie proceeds, they find out that swapping occurred due to those earrings and they need to find Jessica’s body which is currently in the hold of the thief who’s been making money off of guys and working as a pole dancer in a club. [SPOILER ALERT] Jessica succeeds in finding the other piece and puts it back on her ears thus reverting back to the normal state.

About The Director

At Harvard, where he graduated in 1986 with a B.A. in English Literature, Brady acted in and directed various theatre productions, and began writing his own plays and screenplays. Afterwards, he attended the theatre department of the University of Hawaii to get a Master of Fine Arts - in Directing.

Themes Involved

  1. Teenage Drama: The major theme of the movie is teenage drama. Teens are the most volatile section of a generation. Things they do and say are something that surpasses any other action or thought. Similarly, in the movie, it is depicted how teens care little about their values and are concerned with their looks and how other people around them perceive as. An instance from the movie would be the guy friends of Billy, Jessica’s love interest, who are so focused on getting on with girls and using them just because it ‘raises’ their status within the school.

  2. Family Comes First: Jessica after getting her body swapped, realises how lost and conceited she had been. She was detached from her family and wasn’t aware of the issues her parents were facing. It was only after the body swap, that she comes to terms with her family and helps their parents rejuvenate their lifeless relationship.

  3. Internalised Homophobia: Booger, Jessica’s younger brother was shown wearing his sister’s makeup and her clothes. As one might call it as something he’d to annoy her, however, I feel that it was trying to hint at the bigger picture – the stigma related to boys showing off their femininity and how they’re labelled as ‘gay’ that too in an offensive way.

Personal Verdict

My personal verdict on the movie is that it is indeed a good watch when you want to have a fun sesh with your friends or even a ‘me-night’. Although some jokes in the movie might be offensive, however, what needs to be kept in mind is that it was released in the late 90s when there didn’t exist such sensitivity as it now does. Personally, I have always loved the graphic quality of the 90s movies, thus one of my favourite movies to watch.

Snapshots from the Movie

In a Nutshell

The movie is a nice combination of humour, dark humour, teenage drama and a rom-com. Definitely not something to watch with your parents because of some of the explicit scenes and use of humour albeit a good choice for a movie with friends or when you just need a good laugh and relax.

My ratings for the movie –  4 out of 5

You may watch this movie on Disney Hotstar +
