About the Creator

Monyreak Oum was an American web-based animator and writer. Oum attracted attention within the gaming community after releasing an animated video in 2007, titled Haloid, where characters from the Halo and Metroid video game franchises fight against each other, which went viral.

RWBY was Oum's first complete series and sadly, his last as he passed away before he finished volume 3.

Anime Overview

Welcome to the world of Remnant, a fantasy future world where dark evil creatures called “Grimm” have invaded the world and caused all sorts of chaos and destruction in a time when humanity was in the middle of a long-lasting war between four main Tribes.

The main protagonist of our story is a young girl called Ruby and her quest (alongside her team) is to liberate the world from all Evil and end the long-lasting war. As it may sound the story starts with a very generic “evil vs good” storyline, the episodes themselves were more like short stories than full-fledged episodes.

Generic as it is, the main element that made the series kick-off is the over-the-top fighting scenes (a thing that Monty was very talented at) as the anime is based on 3D art where the main focus is fluid movements and fast-paced action scenes.

As the story progresses more and more the characters and the show as a whole become more complex with multiple personality development and more lore explanations, and as the show is yet to be finished (season 9 is coming soon by the time of writing this review) the season 9 is anticipated by a lot.

That being said, the biggest turning point in the show is the death of Monty Oum (the creator of the series) where some changes in the story and the characters had to be made.

Anime Reviews

The show had a mixed bag when it comes to ratings and reviews with an average score of 7.6/10 in IMDP and a 4.4/5 in Crunchyroll with the main complaint about the show being inconsistency and poor lore and world-building with a separate mini-series had to be made just to explain the main elements of the world and that was after three whole seasons!

But yet the show was praised by many for its spectacular action scenes and the special Taste of the American 3D action anime. Also, RWBY was available for free on youtube (first Four seasons) which helped a lot in making the show more popular.

With the success and the big fanbase it had, The series had a Japanese reboot published by Crunchyroll with a different story based on a newly released manga called RWBY.

Overall the show has its ups and downs and with all the critics it had the show was still one the better ones when it comes to 3D action fights and taking into account that its main creator died in the middle of the show, we can say that RWBY had a fairly decent success.

Verdict

in for some fast action fighting with some impressive 3D visuals then you will surely find something to love in RWBY, there are a lot of things to like about RWBY and the fast-paced action has to be the best the show had to offer (specifically in the first three seasons when Monty was the main visual artist of the show).

But if you are into deep complex stories with perfect storytelling then you might find something better other than RWBY where the lore is a bit confusing and the storyline could be better especially when the main creator is changed in the middle of the show.

Anime rating: 4/5
