Introduction
 

Coursera is a global online learning platform founded in 2012 by Stanford University professors Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller. It provides resources such as online courses, specializations, and degrees. This online education site has courses available in various languages that are globally identified and used.

Coursera is an organisation which has collaborated with various top-ranking universities in order to provide content for their specialised courses and degrees. Courses here provide learning in different areas such as machine learning, engineering, sciences, technology, language, humanities, laboratory, medicine, mathematics, art, business, marketing, etc.

Foundation 

Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller were inspired when their university decided to put their content online. Soon after they left university, they decided to launch Coursera as an online platform for learning. Universities such as Princeton, Stanford, the University of Michigan and the University of Pennsylvania came up first with their collaborations with the website.

The company initially started with funding of $16 million and now in 2019, it evaluates a total valuation of $1 billion.

Partners

Coursera has spread his reach with more than 200 partner universities in across 50 countries. Coursera is working with universities and colleges, and not only this but also with corporates and governments. University partners include the University of São Paulo in Brazil, the University of London in the UK, Indian School of Business of India, Yonsei University in Korea, and institutions like Yale, University of Illinois and University of Pennsylvania.

Working and quality 

Coursera has a wide range of courses that give online training for 2 to 6 week comprising of 2 hours of video lectures a week. These are often pre-recorded lectures or sometimes live training options are available too. Courses often give assignments, exercises, projects, tests and even final exams. Similarly, Coursera has availability of online on-demand courses which provide all of the material at once and later can be studied in some portions of time.

Coursera provides the courses making the possibility of distance learning. Also, there is some amount of money Coursera charging some amount of money for each of their courses ranging from $30 to $99. Similarly, Coursera is also providing monthly and annual plans for providing a cost effective method for regular learners. On the other hand, not all courses on Coursera are paid, they also provide some courses absolutely free of cost.

Furthermore, the wide genre of these courses is for those who are indulged in app development, business writing. Also, certification from companies such as Amazon, Google, SAS, IBM is no longer an unachievable target.

Similarly, Coursera has now launched ‘Coursera for Campus’, this provides an opportunity to other universities who aren’t in the partner universities, chance to work with Coursera and promote learning by the collaboration of renowned professors, universities, and specialised courses to be available worldwide. 

Also, according to a recent announcement, Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta has successfully developed a collaboration with Coursera and has launched its two Mastertrack certified courses on it. Not only this but also, Coursera is bringing out others of its partners too such as NSIT, IIT, IIIT and much more, where students can access to courses for free.
