There are times when we are super motivated to get everything done and we actually do it as well. Everything seems going smoothly in life. But, that’s not always the case. There are days when we lack motivation and just stay in bed all day, procrastinating, overthinking, and overburdening ourselves. In fact, that’s how the course of life is, highs and lows are inevitable.

But, all the important tasks won’t wait for you to feel motivated and productive again. All the deadlines won’t change themselves just because you’re feeling low and you’re not in the mindset to get things done. Finding motivation, and doing all it takes to complete all the tasks at hand, is what sets the successful ones apart from the rest. But being motivated all the time is not a cakewalk. It requires efforts from your side.

So, here are the top four scientifically proven methods to find motivation when you’re feeling low.

1. Action is Equal to Motivation

Motivation is not equal to action. In fact, it’s the opposite. The more you take action and the more you actually do things, the more motivated you feel. If you take action, you’ll see that the task is not as difficult as you assumed it to be. You’ll see that it’s achievable and you’ll also feel accomplished that you’ve already taken the necessary steps towards its completion.

This is actually tried and tested and not just a theory. It works for most of the people who try this. When you see yourself progressing, it creates more motivation which backs up more action. Take the example of writing a long essay that’s been hanging for weeks. You’re now close to the deadline for submission. You have two options here. Either you can sit in a corner and keep on overanalyzing and overthinking about it. Or, you can actually get up and get started with the research you need to in order to complete it.

Taking action requires way less energy than laying in bed and stressing about how you’ll complete everything in time. So, next time you yourself in this situation, just get up and get started. Getting started will give you the drive to complete the task as well.

2. Analyze your Rewards

Rewards usually fall into two categories- intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic rewards are the ones that we give to ourselves such as a sense of achievement, passion for the things you do, curiosity, mastering a skill, etc. Extrinsic rewards are external rewards and factors that influence us to do certain things such as fear of punishment, good grades, money, or other materialistic things.

Think about your goals, short term, and long term. Try and list about six positive outcomes and rewards of achieving that goal. Establish a ‘why’ for these goals. After this exercise, whether those outcomes and rewards are extrinsic or extrinsic. Having a good balance of both the intrinsic and extrinsic rewards is essential in order to keep the motivational level up to the mark.

In case you have more intrinsic rewards, try and create some extrinsic ones as well. That will give you the extra kick that you need. You can reward yourself with a sweet treat or you can go on a little shopping spree.

In case you see more extrinsic rewards, sit back, and analyze. Is that something you really like doing? Is it bringing you any joy? Are you doing it just for the sake of making your external situation better? If this is the case, then you will struggle with the motivation part. You can take some personality tests to find out what actually brings joy and happiness to you. A link to one such test is at the end of this article.

3. Keep your Goals in Front of your Eyes

Put your goals out in front of yourself to see them every single day. You can set goals, affirmations, or intentions for yourself. Doing this creates a constant reminder for you to keep striving.

One of the best ways to do this is to write your goals somewhere you’ll see them often. You can write them on a sticky note and stick them on your mirror, refrigerator, workspace, car dashboard, or anywhere else. You can also make a to-do list every day. And then, as you cross out things on that list, that will feel accomplished and motivation will automatically pump in for the next day. This will also make you feel an inch closer to your goal with each passing day.

Another thing that you can do is to create a vision board. This involves envisioning your best life and creating a collage of pictures that you relate to a ‘happy’ life. The pictures should create an emotional connection and excitement for you. You can put it somewhere you’ll see it often. You can even put it as wallpaper for your phone or laptop.

4. Change your Mindset

This is a huge step when it comes to finding motivation. If you have negativity surrounding you, there’s no way that you can make room for motivation. So, getting rid of the negativity is a must here. There are a couple of ways you can do this.

Try and incorporate gratitude into your life. You can list down the things that you feel grateful for. Be grateful for what you have today and put the maximum efforts to achieve more in the future.

You can also find motivation and happiness in simple things like happy music and comedy videos. You can also do things like decluttering in order to give a clean start to your everyday work. When you feel that the motivation level is dropping again, you can go out for a short walk. These simple things also do the trick. Try and make the most out of the everyday and every second. That’s what makes the difference.
