Leadership, by dictionary definition, is the action of leading a group of people or an organization. Leadership is one skill every successful entrepreneur, influencer, and leader has. However, every leader has a different approach to it. It is because of its versatility that the style of leadership has to be changed according to circumstances.
Take, for example, the difference between Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni's leadership. Kohli tries to be a role model for others, the one upon whom everyone can look up to. He leads the team from the front. On the other hand, MS Dhoni is a cool and calm leader. He never leads the team from the front but tries to be the backbone.
Leadership is subjective for everyone as everyone has a different approach to it. Here are the six most common types of leadership:
1. Autocratic Leadership-
“A leader is a dealer in hope”
-Napoleon Bonaparte
This type of leadership revolves around the boss. Here, the leaders are accountable for everything and hold complete authority and responsibility. Here, the leaders make decisions without seeking any advice from their subordinates. An autocratic environment has no flexibility. Statistically very few situations require this style of leadership.
Some famous leaders who use this style are- Donald Trump, Albert J. Dunlap.
2. Charismatic Leadership
“Actions, not words are the ultimate results of leadership”
-Bill Owen
These leaders have the most powerful personalities. They lead by example and gather a mass following. They implement their revolutionary ideas through their followers. Charisma, here, not only influences the behavior of their followers but also affects their beliefs and values.
Some notable people who follow this style are- Barack Obama, Narendra Modi, and Oprah Winfrey.
3. Visionary Leadership
“A leader who rules on authority to solve problems is bound to come to grief”
-Nelson Mandela
These leaders are the ones who change the world by molding the thoughts of the public. For them, the public always comes first. They need the masses to understand their idea and mission. Their methods and ideologies, hence, are always centered around the public. These leaders are very ambitious and are those who are highly visionary.
Notable people who have used this style to change the world are Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr.
4. Coach Leadership
“I would be ready to die on the field, if Dhoni wanted me to”
-Ravichandran Ashwin
Coach leadership is not only one of the most efficient forms of leadership but also one of the rarest. This could be because it is more hectic and time-intensive in comparison to other leadership. These leaders dig into the mindset of their teammates. They are the ones that create a positive vibe and mindset in the team. You can’t mess around them. They do not depict any emotions and believe that emotions are a barrier to achieve their final goal.
They are often very open with their teams but are never negative about how they present feedback to the team. Some famous leaders who follow this style are Elon Musk and MS Dhoni.
5. Participative Leadership
“The art of communication is the language of leadership”
-James Humes
As the name suggests, these leaders are the ones who initiate discussions and believe communication is the key to success. They take the ideas of their team members and implement those making the members feel a sense of belongingness.
This leads to higher workplace satisfaction in employees. Most world leaders follow this style. The leader is mainly the voice of a large team of employees. The team decides a goal, plan, mission and the leader engages and voices out the ideas to the masses.
Some leaders who follow this style are Narendra Modi and Abraham Lincoln.
6. Transactional Leadership
“Leadership is about taking responsibility, not making excuses”
-Mitt Romney
These leaders are only focused on the performance of the team. They believe in rewards and punishment. You do good- they reward you. You fail- you are punished.
However, punishments are not hard or brutal. These leaders are mentors, guides and trainees. They always meet their goals. Nothing can stop transactional leaders from reaching their final mission.
However, it is challenging. Not all transactional leaders are able to bring out creativity from the team. That is why many organizations sign them up to achieve a particular goal. It can be both a misfire or miraculous.
In the case of Apple, Jobs was sacked from the board and John Sculley was assigned Job’s former position. Here the board wanted to reach specific goals, but for a creativity run organization, we saw this style misfired. Some leaders who follow this style are John Sculley and Gary Vaynerchuck.
The aforementioned styles of leadership are most commonly observed.
Leadership is a value that can take you far ahead not only in your career but also in your life. Hence, Be a Leader!
