How to Deal with the Pressure of Exams

The sentence, “Exams are near!” automatically frowns every student, heightens his/her senses and accelerates his/her breathing. These three words are enough to give any student an adrenaline rush.

This is because students have wrongfully made exams as the evilest event of their lives. Students, today, do not see exams as a medium to check their progress and retention abilities but as a necessary evil to get promoted or selected.

However, students can not be blamed for this approach to exams as this is the way they have been taught to face exams. They have been made to see exams as nothing but a ladder which is necessary to be climbed in order to fit into the society’s definition of being educated.

But, is it right to have such a mediocre definition of exams? Is this what exams truly stand for? Exams are tests taken to check how much the student has learned and gained in the field of study he/she has done. However, this is not the way students are asked to look at exams. They are forced to look at exams in numerical terms. The number they score, the rank they secure, has become a testimonial to their intelligence and the true meaning of knowledge has dissipated.

This narrow approach to look at exams is why most students sweat on the thought of exams. They feel pressured because of their sole concern for a good score, to attain which they opt for bogus methods to score well.

To dodge pressure, students need to bring a change in their outlook towards exams. Here are some ways to reduce this self-constructed pressure during exams -

1. See Them as an Opportunity to Judge Your Strength

Do not make an exam a matter of life and death. See it as an opportunity to know yourself better. You can analyze how much knowledge you have gained, judge your retention capability and writing skills. Exams also provide you with an opportunity where you can get to know which subject intrigues you the most.

2. Do Not Box up Your Thoughts

Students tend to stress privately during exams. They may seem like they are lying down with their eyes closed peacefully but in reality, maybe having a thousand thoughts in their brains running like Usain Bolt.

This volcano of thoughts is what adds to their stress. However, if you give voice and words to your thought and share it with your elders, their motivational words will help reduce pressure massively.

3. Make a Proper Schedule

You must make a proper schedule and try to follow it. This schedule should consist of the time at which you wake up and the sequence of the subjects or chapters that are to be studied first and last. The chapters you already know or are fond of should be taken up first as they take less time and give you a sense of relief when completed. Then, after some time, you should take up the difficult ones and, in the end, again go for the ones you knew or had learned earlier.

4. Listen to Good Music

Everyone has a different taste in music and the definition of good music is also diverse for every individual. However, you should try and listen to soothing songs that give you a sense of serenity and peace. This helps in bringing peace to a chaotic mind during exam season.

5. Dance or Sing It Out

Whenever you feel pressurized and cannot think straight, just put up an upbeat song and either start dancing to it like no one is watching you or start singing it from the top of your lungs. You will realize, after some time, that it has completely soothed your nerves and cleared your mind of distracting thoughts and you can resume studies.

6. Do Not Entirely Quit Your Daily Routine

Some people have the habit of watching a particular T.V. series other like to go out and play at a particular time during their course of the day.

Try and not completely give up on your daily routine. In most cases, students sit in front of their books 24X7. This strenuous activity does nothing but tires and distracts your mind.

7. Start Your Days Early

This primarily means that you should wake up early. Waking up early gives you the satisfaction of having more time in your hands. This makes you work properly and sequentially.

It even gives you a scope to make a proper schedule if you have a lot of time in hand. Another plus point can be that the morning time is the most beautiful time to adore nature, and nature always radiates positivity.

8. Keep a Proper Diet

The majority of students either eat a lot of entirely quit eating under pressure. This must not be the case. It is very important to maintain a healthy diet as what we eat affects our thoughts and activities. An unhealthy diet during exams causes mood swings, sluggishness, low retention capability which eventually leads to disappointment and more stress.

9. It Is Okay to Cry

Stress makes you anxious and when a tornado of emotions piles up, it is completely okay to let it all out. Crying is not at all the trait of a weak, but of a strong. It is okay to cry as it takes away a huge load residing in your heart and helps you to concentrate properly.

10. Watch Your Favorite Movie

This can drastically reduce your stress. Watching a good positive move takes your mind away from negative thoughts and infuses positivity in your brain. It relieves your overly-stressed mind during exams.

These pointers are helpful to reduce stress and panic attacks during exams to a great extent. However, it eventually boils down to your notion of exams. Exams can both be your enemy or your friend. It all depends on how you wish it to be.
