1. Who is your favourite writer and why?

My favourite writers would probably be JK Rowling, Arundhati Roy and Ayn Rand. All three of them write in vibrantly different genres, but the strong feminist and individualistic undertones in their work is always a breath of fresh air. Their books have layered characters with very well-etched arcs, and there’s always something new that strikes you each time you read.

Amongst poets, my favourites would be Sylvia Plath and Richard Siken, both of whom write poetry with powerful and moving imagery, which has always left me inspired and appalled by the sheer genius of their works.

2. Where does your inspiration lie?

I believe one writes best about what they have experienced. Hence, my inspiration would be my everyday life, the people and places that surround me, and the emotions I go through on a daily basis.

3. Which is your favourite book and why?

My favourite book is the God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. It is a very poignant story, with subtle social commentary about almost everything. I remember reading it in one day, simply because it was so hard to put down. The book deals with a lot of historical, political, cultural and societal issues through the lens of a dysfunctional family, and goes back and forth between different time periods. The subplots make you cry and think and laugh, and the characters stay with you long after you’re done with the book.

4. What are your career goals and how is what you are doing is going to help you with that?

My career goals do not intersect much with my love for literature, because I want to go into scientific research. However, writing skills are always an asset to have in any domain, and a keen understanding of the world is integral to understand any diverse dataset that one may use to conduct research. Writing clearly and legibly makes it easier to put your point across, no matter what field you are pursuing.
