Dasha Gartman – From Random Videos to National TV - How I Fell in Love with Indonesia and Went Viral (Cultural Ambassador Jakarta)

Dasha Gartman Interview

"People thought I was using Indonesia for fame, but I stayed because I fell in love with the kindness and warmth—I wanted the world to see it too."

1. What inspired you to start creating content in Indonesia?

I never planned on becoming a content creator—especially not in Indonesia. Some friends told me I had potential, but I didn’t believe them at first. I started by posting random videos, and after a few months, I tried my first street interviews. One of them went viral, and that’s how it all began.

2. How do you keep your content fun while still respecting local culture?

I think when you truly love a culture, respect comes naturally. I’m genuinely in love with Indonesian culture—the kindness, warmth, and humor. Indonesians are so welcoming; it makes it easy to both enjoy myself and stay respectful.

3. What’s one moment that completely blew your mind?

Probably the first time I was invited to a national TV show, or when strangers started recognizing me on the street!

4. How do you stay authentic with such a huge following?

I don’t try to be perfect. I still have days when I feel tired or overwhelmed. I keep things real by casually talking to my mom, drinking mango juice—by the way, I love mango lassi!—and watching random cat videos. At the end of the day, I’m not trying to impress anyone, and I think people can sense when something is genuine and when it’s not.

5. What’s a typical day like when you’re not filming?

Super normal. I sleep, eat good food, hang out with friends, talk to my family, study, maybe go for a walk, or do a bit of exercise.

6. Is there a myth or rumor about you that’s completely untrue?

Yes—the idea that I only care about views and that I’m using Indonesia just for content. That really hurts. I’ve visited orphanages, helped during Ramadan, and done charity work—not for clout, but because I truly care.

7. How do you blend comedy and culture so well?

I guess I don’t overthink it. I’m genuinely fascinated by culture and language, and I love being a bit silly. I laugh at myself first. I think when you’re willing to look a little ridiculous, people feel comfortable laughing with you, not at you.

8. If you could live inside any app or game, which one would it be and why?

From gaming apps, I’d choose GTA or Mobile Legends because I love games where you can explore, be a little chaotic, but also have a mission!
