HuffPost: An Online Phenomenon

"Where the Internet is about the availability of information, blogging is about making information creation available to anyone." – George Siemens. In this constant hustle in today's day and age, one must be aware of all that's happening around him. No matter what you do for a living, chances are you're engaged with the news at some level daily. But long gone are the days when newspaper and television were the only news providers. A new medium for sourcing news has started to catch up and even surpass television – the Internet. These mainstream sources of news such as newspapers and TV aren't gone yet, of course, but the Internet is now growing as a preferred source.

With an increase in the consumption of online news and blogs, more and more news and blogging sites pop up each day. With so much information just a click away, there are concerns about the credibility of that piece of information as a half-truth is even more dangerous than a lie. These concerns are significant as journalism is built on credibility. It is your responsibility to find a reliable source for any kind of information. Huff Post is one such site.

Introduction to HuffPost

HuffPost is an American liberal news and blog site, with localized and international editions. This popular conservative news site gathers headlines from around the Web. The site offers news, satire, blogs, and original content, and covers politics, business, entertainment, environment, technology, popular media, lifestyle, culture, comedy, healthy living, women's interests, and local news featuring columnists.

Started in May 2005, the HuffPost (formerly known as Huffington Post) was co-founded by Arianna Huffington and former AOL executive Kenneth Lerer. Initially, the site only drew on A-list celebrities and high-powered friends but soon the site opened its doors to many bloggers from across the political and cultural spectrum. None of the bloggers were paid, but thousands of posts were contributed, and the site became a pioneer at enticing writers to work online for free in exchange for the potential for wide exposure.

An International Expansion

The HuffPost is charting a path to global domination. It started its local sites with a site for Detroit and began moving into international sites in 2011. As of 2020, it has expanded to many different countries including sites in Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Spain, North Africa, The U.K., and Germany, with more than half its traffic coming from outside the U.S. It also launched HuffPost Live, an online network that rejected typical television programming formats and encouraged viewer participation. In 2015 The Huffington Post became part of Verizon after the communications company bought AOL

HuffPost Officially Launched in India

In 2014, The Times of India Group announced the official launch of an Indian edition of HuffPost. GroupM, the media investment conglomerate has come on board as a strategic partner for brand synergies and advertising in India for HuffPost. India's investment rules cap foreign media ownership at 26%. As a result, HuffPost has a content partnership with TOI where the two companies will invest resources and share the revenues and the India team will have access to all its news and reporters globally and vice-versa.

"I'm delighted to launch HuffPost India, which will be our 13th edition since we began our international expansion three years ago. The launch comes at a moment when India is facing huge and unique challenges, but also when India's spiritual traditions have taken their place at the center of a global conversation about what it means to live a good life. It's in looking back to these ancient traditions and tools that so much of the wisdom and strength needed to build the future will be found. I'm thrilled that HuffPost India will be there to chronicle this story and – just as important – help Indians tell their stories themselves." said its editor in chief Arianna Huffington.
