I Have My Own Way of Practising Music - Agus Salim

My name is Agus Salim. I am a violinist as well as a music composer. Every day I make music.  Music is also a part of my life.  Some of the music I make can be seen on my YouTube Channel “Salim Violin”.

1. Tell us more about your background and journey.

I was born in Teluk Belitung, district, Meranti Islands, Riau Province, Indonesia On August 25, 1988. I live in an art environment. There are so many stages of my performance events that are involved.  Among them are the Bokor World Music Festival and Indonesian Poetry Day and many others.

2. When did you first decide you wanted to pursue music and how did you start?

Initially in 2008, I decided to take music art education at an institution, namely the Riau Malay Arts Academy, at that time I chose to major in music.  The reason is because I really want to be able to play the violin and also learn music creation. Since then my days have been full of practice, at least 4 hours a day.  I still do this until now to maintain my skill in playing the violin.

3. Who is your favourite artist and why?

Hamzah Dolmat is a Malay violinist and composer who I really admire. Even though he's dead. The way to play the violin and the feeling of playing made me love this guy. A figure who really inspires me also makes me always excited to play the violin as well as make music.

4. Can you throw some light on opportunities one gets as a singer?

This opportunity is relative depending on the ability of the singer himself.  As a composer, I only try to maximize what the singer has.

5. Is format training required or can one train themselves purely on the basis of talent?

Both are very important, I have my own way of practicing music. For example, I study harder and also have scheduled exercises.

6. What piece of advice would you like to give to future and aspiring artists?

Be brave and don't be afraid to start working.

7. Which is your favourite book and why?

Favorite book Ayat-ayat Cinta - Habiburahman El-Shirazy.  I like this novel because in this book I get the impression of a very touching love story and indirectly I want to make music like the story in this novel.
