Role of MNREGA in Rural Development

MGNREGA was launched in 2005 as the
Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. This scheme was launched with the motive of enhancing social security, especially in the rural areas.

This scheme was made to ensure “Right to work”. The main concept of this labor law is that the local government will have to provide at least 100 days of waged labor to the applicants which will help to enhance the quality of life in those areas.

Following are some of the key functions of MGNREGA –
  • Giving paid employment to unskilled labor for at least 100 days.
  • Construction of basic infrastructure in rural areas while utilizing the untapped rural labor.
  • Ensuring the social inclusion of vulnerable and poor populations by strengthening and improving their quality of life.

5 Crore Houses Provided Employment

Anyone who is more than 18 years of age, is part of a local household and Indian citizen and volunteers for unskilled labor is eligible to apply for job through MGNREGA scheme.

Around 60% of the population of India lives in the rural areas. The life of people who are living in rural areas is comparatively bad.

Around 22% of the rural population was found to be below poverty line. There is a huge problem of unemployment and poverty. Issues like lack of investment and development programs were major reasons behind these numbers.

Since the launch of MGNREGA, around 5 crore households have been provided with employment on an annual basis, this covers a substantial amount of people who were vulnerable both financially and socially.

Through MGNREGA, the Indian government has been successful till an extend in making a sustainable development program.

Any area cannot be called developed in a true sense until and unless the rays of development has reached the last house, to the people who are most vulnerable and neediest. MGNREGA has been able to reach the last house, this has been one of the greatest achievement of this scheme.

In rural setup agriculture is the largest source of employment, so the people who do not have land i.e. the landless families, these are the people who condition is worst, and through MGNREGA, these people have been benefitted.

Majority of the work provided through MGNREGA is of unskilled nature, so the people who do not have land to do farming and do not have specific skill sets to get a job elsewhere, MGNREGA is the best alternative available to them.

When this scheme was launched it increased the purchasing power of these people and this was the biggest achievement in terms of social impact that this scheme has got.

Infrastructure Development

Another aspect of the MGNREGA is the development work that is done through it. All the people who volunteer for work, are given mostly development related work, i.e. infrastructure construction etc.
A lot of work is done on private lands which results in efficient agriculture and ease of work.

This overall results in high income in the rural areas. This is how this scheme benefits the rural society as a whole, firstly by giving jobs to people who cannot work in agriculture or other sectors and secondly by developing common infrastructure for utilization of the entire community.

MGNREGA is considered as a silver bullet in the war with unemployment and poverty. With improved policies and better management, this can do more wonders in the time to come.
