Role of Youth in Nation Building

The youth of today are the future citizens of tomorrow. It is therefore, imperative or mandatory that they are not only appreciating the problems that faced the country, but also meet them as a challenge.

The youth power has the genesis or origin of many a revolution around the world. They were in the forefront of the French revolution, the communist revolution and even our own fight for independence.

Their phenomenal power if effectively mobilized could help in nation building that is the need of the hour.

Problems facing the nation

The nation even after more than fifty year of independence has not been able to reduce or alleviate the miseries of rural folks. The problems of illiteracy, in sanitation, superstition and poverty have deprived them of fruits of freedom.

So enormous are these problems that nothing short of youth revolution can sweep them away. It is therefore essential that they should be fired with idealism, the like of which we saw during our fight of independence.

Role of youth in meeting social challenges

It calls for a concentrated effort on the part of the government by involving them also in this monumental task. This has been done successfully in many European countries, where social service is an essential part of curriculum.

Only when the youth have acquitted themselves in this task, they are eligible for being awarded degrees and government jobs. This has had profitable effect on the youth and the society at large.

The energies of the youth should be effectively channelized in augmenting and amplifying the government efforts, in spreading literacy to the villages and slums spread across the countryside. A short interaction would not only help the rural folks, but also would be an eye opener for students.

Besides imparting elementary education, they can also inculcate good hygienic practices and help improve the sanitary conditions in the villages.

Their interface would help to remove many social evils that are still prevalent in our society, like superstition, evils of dowry, child marriage, castes, etc. These dark practices are the only reasons for the root cause of their backwardness.

Social services to be made compulsory

Youth can play a significant role in spreading socially critical messages like “small family, happy family”, “evil of alcoholism”, etc.

The benefits of self-reliance could be demonstrated by augmenting the government’s efforts in forming and running cooperatives. This will not only make them self-reliant, but also provide gainful employment in the villages itself.

A proper orientation is required, to participate in the social upliftment of the society. This will equipped the youth to meet challenges of his life, more practically and successfully.

The government should seize the opportunity and harness this power by making social service a compulsory part of the curriculum, before providing degrees or employment.

Conclusion

The youth should rise to the occasion of these problems and take it as a challenge. This would only be possible, if they work with a missionary zeal, in eradicating the old age shackles or chain that are eating or destroying the vitals of our country. They shall not only help the country, but shall be laying down its foundation, for their own happy and prosperous tomorrow.
