Current Pandemic Has Shook Brands and Bloggers to Their Bones - Aishwarya Sharma

While my fashion fed brains pushed me preach my style, I felt a dire need to show the world; especially to youth, the power of fashion from an influencer-gaze.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

My journey started back in 2017 when fashion blogging in India was still nascent and influencers posed as mannequins for brands as purpose. It was a eureka moment that hit me questioning the whole existence for a fashion voice that cuts through voyeur and misogyny. While my fashion fed brains pushed me preach my style, I felt a dire need to show the world; especially to youth, the power of fashion from an influencer-gaze.

Brands have been kind enough to identify the fashion activist in me to drive their purpose ridden communications helping me be the agent for internalising the unheard voices of the social causes and grave realities in today’s world.

So, here I am with my 3 year old little famous Fashion Activism heavy blog Figuramoda along with my newly launched e-commerce platform, MODDOTCOM.

2. What led you to start your page on Instagram?

The sheer desire of sharing my thoughts with people not just around me but with a mass audience. Instagram became the platform best suited for me to reach out to them and make activism through fashion a daily activity. I wanted to become a part of everyone's daily life schedule, something that they want to keep coming back for!

3. Do you think that there will be a new style statement or fashion obsession with the new normal? If so, what would be your choice and why?

Everything is changing and has to. There's no way back from here but only forward and Fashion too, will. The new virtual couture and fashion shows, the first ever online editorials, just about everything.
I think more importantly, the new style statement will be conscious. Conscious living, fashion, lifestyle with more mindful clothes, content and sustainability through fashion.

4. Is it financially sustainable to be a fashion blogger today?

That's subjective. The more people that get into this, the more crowded it is becoming and not many eventually find their space in this industry. Though, this necessarily doesn't mean there's no space for new people coming in, on contrary, there's enough space for everyone to co-exist. However, I still feel that the current pandemic has shook brands and bloggers to their bones and finances have gone for a toss for many.

5. What is your idea of success or your mantra in life?

It's simple. "If not you, then who?, If not now, then when?"

I live by these lines and I continue to raise my voice against injustices no matter how hard it is at times and especially through these concerning times.

7. Do you have any tips for people who want to join this field?

If your thoughts aren't original, there are very less chances for you to excel in this field. At all times, you have to be yourself and that's the hardest part here too. You see, you are surrounded by 'perfect' people and 'perfect' lives on social media, all the time. Yet, you've to fight your thoughts and distinguish between their 'perfect' lives and your real life. No competition, sheer originality. It will take you far.

8. Which is your favourite book and why?

It's a constant struggle to choose one. I used to think of myself as a Jane Austen's person. I think I still am!
