
We have seen the 2016 Presidential Election and now we are waiting for the 2020 Election to happen and get a new President (hoping so), while this waiting is sort of the anticipation we can see in the movies. A country where scam, corruption, exploitative politics are common and in trend, a genre like this is relevant.
While most of the films under political genre are censored or it is made sure they get never released, political films are hard-hitting and they talk about real issues in the society that are mostly ignored or policies that are needed but never implemented.
Someone said Films can be the greatest weapon and it truly is showing us the true nature of politics, agenda, politicians, their motives, or greed. As the election fever kicks in, here are some of the notable political films ever made:
1. All the President's Men (1976): It is a film that inspired many people to become reporters and inspired the profession of journalism to a new height. It is an American political thriller film, which uncovers the great Watergate Scandal, which compelled the then President Richard P.Nixon to resign from his post.
It is an intelligent, realistic, and gripping watch which will make you question yourself and the politicians and also somewhere make you believe in journalists and reporters.
2. V for Vendetta (2005): V for Vendetta is based on Alan Moore's graphic novel of the same name. Set in the year 2020, the protagonist is a masked vigilante who plans and fights to overthrow the totalitarian government with the help of a female accomplice.
The political message through this film resonated with the viewers in the real world and even inspired the hacktivist group Anonymous.
3. Milk (2008): The film revolves around the life of a gay rights activist Harvey Milk wh0, in the late '70s, became the first openly gay person to be elected in the public office of California. Milk was later assassinated as he fought for intolerance faced by the community.
4. Lincoln (2012): Lincoln is one of the compelling historic drama about statesmanship and democracy in America. Directed by Spielberg, it portrayed the life of President Lincoln and his endeavors to abolish slavery and to reinforce democracy. The acting of Daniel Day-Lewis as Lincoln will make you smitten by his struggles.
5. The Ides of March (2011): The film tells the story of a campaign manager whose huge ambitions result in making him pawn between rival campaigns. This film splendidly sheds a light on the power players in politics who pulls the strings from behind just to manipulate the whole scenario and campaigns.
6. Wag the Dog (1997): This political film reconnects the relation that media plays in politics. This political satire film shows the life of a President who is caught up in a sex scandal a few days before his re-election.
So, to avoid media outbursts and outrage, he hires a producer to invent a fake war, so that people's attention gets diverted from his scandal to the war.
7. Selma (2014): Selma is based on the Civil Rights Movement and the Selma campaign for voting rights in 1965. The film is centered around Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and tells the story from his perspective and his struggle for equal rights.
