JB Shashank Interview

“What people see is the laughter, the energy, the light. What they don’t see is the exhaustion behind it.”

1. What sparked your journey into content creation at such a young age?

I’ve always had a creative side—cracking jokes with friends, making memes on Facebook about six years ago. At that time, I was going through a tough phase mentally and physically. Since I’ve always been drawn to movies, filmmaking, and cinematography, I started channeling that energy into making videos.

What began as a way to pull myself out of a dark place slowly turned into a journey of learning, growing, and expressing. In many ways, content creation genuinely saved my life.

2. How do you balance humor with storytelling in your videos?

I enjoy experimenting with different formats—dialogue-based skits, parody songs, or narrative-driven videos. Personally, I believe storytelling is the most powerful way to make an impact.

Since I focus on entertaining content, I try to keep the scripts relatable. And when humor blends naturally with a good story, it really clicks with people. Relatable humor told through storytelling just works—it connects instantly.

3. Has creating in Kannada helped or limited your reach online?

I don’t think language should ever limit art. Even though I create in Kannada, my work has connected with audiences across South India, and sometimes even beyond.

I make sure to add English subtitles to all my videos, which makes them more accessible. It’s been amazing to receive DMs from non-Kannada speakers saying my content helped them understand or even learn the language. Creating in Kannada while reaching people from different linguistic backgrounds has been incredibly fulfilling.

4. What’s one mistake new creators often make?

Giving up too soon.

The content space is constantly evolving, and seeing new creators rise overnight can feel intimidating. But what many forget is that everyone’s journey is different—your page 1 can’t be compared to someone else’s page 20. Constant comparison and obsessing over numbers can be very demotivating, especially with unpredictable algorithms.

The real key is consistency. For me, it took a year to reach 5,000 followers, another two years to hit 20,000, and three more years to grow to 200,000. It’s a long, demanding journey, but if you want to get somewhere, you have to keep showing up—even on the days you don’t feel like it. Focus on the content; the growth will follow.

5. What’s something your audience doesn’t see but takes the most effort behind the scenes?

The toughest part of being a creator is staying consistently creative. People see the final product—the energy, the lighting, the happy face—but they don’t see the mental exhaustion behind it.

Creativity isn’t a switch you can just flip on. It takes effort to come up with an idea that feels fresh, even more effort to script it in a way that resonates, and everything in you to perform it with the right energy—especially on the days you don’t feel like it.

There are times of creative block, when nothing feels good enough and self-doubt creeps in. But over time, I’ve learned these lows are part of the process. Sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is pause—let your mind rest, reset, and return stronger.

Content creation might look like fun and games from the outside, but it’s also emotional labor, creative pressure, and hours of invisible effort. And while I love doing it, I’ve also learned that showing up means respecting your own limits and finding balance.

6. Who in the creator space do you quietly admire and why?

Honestly, I learn something from almost every creator I come across.

Some have taught me to stay organized. Some have shown me how to better execute a script. And a few have even taught me what not to do—which is equally important.

Even today, I continue to learn from the people I work with and those around me. In many ways, I owe a part of my journey to my co-creators. Each of them has contributed, directly or indirectly, to how I’ve grown.

So it feels unfair to name just one—it’s been a collective influence, and I’m genuinely grateful for that.

7. If your life had a background score, which song would be playing right now?

 Baanigondu Elle Ellide.

It’s a song about searching, dreaming, and quietly chasing something bigger than yourself. That’s exactly how life feels right now—a journey full of questions, lessons, and hope. The path isn’t always clear, but the drive to keep moving forward never fades.
