Is Sex Necessary for Life?

We all know that experiencing sexual excitement and enjoyment is necessary for a significant percentage of us to feel healthy and balanced throughout our lives.

Humans say that rebound sex is important after a breakup and it is an important release if you are under pressure.

In one of the most credible studies correlating overall health with sexual frequency, Queens University in Belfast, Northern Ireland, tracked the mortality of about 1,000 middle-aged men over the course of a decade. The study was designed to compare persons of comparable circumstances, age, and health.

Its findings, published in 1997 in the British Medical Journal, were that men who reported the highest frequency of orgasm enjoyed a death rate half that of the laggards.

"Having sex alone through masturbation won't stimulate the release of as much oxytocin or other mood-boosting hormones as having sex as part of a loving relationship," says Nicole Cirino, M.D., Associate Professor of Psychiatry at OHSU's Center for Women's Health.

"You can release neurochemicals from caressing skin, kissing, sexual talk, feeling close to your partner, and enjoying mutual sexual satisfaction," she adds.

According to another study by the University of Chicago, researchers published online March 10 by the British Medical Journal. Men in good or excellent health at 55 can add five to seven years to that number. Equally healthy women gain slightly less, three to six years.

The study showed that men are more likely to be sexually active, report a good sex life and be interested in sex than women. This difference was most stark among the 75- to 85-year-old group, where almost 40 percent of men, compared to 17 percent of women, were sexually active.

Some Benefits of Sex

Less frequent colds and flu: A Wilkes University study demonstrated that couples who have sex at least twice a week tend to have higher amounts of the antibody immunoglobulin A (IgA) than couples who engaged in sex less than once a week. IgA is a necessary component in beating back sickness and for keeping the immune system strong.

Can regular sex ward off colds and flu?

Decreased Depression and Anxiety: Such was the implication of a 2002 study of 293 women. American psychologist Gordon Gallup reported that sexually active participants whose male partners did not use condoms were less subject to depression than those whose partners did. One theory of causality: Prostaglandin, a hormone found only in semen, may be absorbed in the female genital tract, thus modulating female hormones.

Improved Sense of Smell: After sex, production of the hormone prolactin surges. This in turn causes stem cells in the brain to develop new neurons in the brain’s olfactory bulb, its smell center.

The better your sense of smell, the more you enjoy sex, study suggests

Prevent Preeclampsia: Pregnant women can be at risk of developing a condition called preeclampsia. A research has shown that a special protein called HLA-G found in a man’s sperm may prevent preeclampsia. HLA-G can help regulate the body’s immune system. The study showed that if a woman has had enough exposure to her partner’s semen before conception, she is significantly less likely to get preeclampsia

Reduced Risk of Heart Disease: It looks like an active sex life can reduce your risk of developing heart disease or stroke. In 2010, the New England Research Institute conducted a large study that found that regular sexual activity may reduce risk of heart disease while infrequent sex appears to predict a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease independent of erectile dysfunction.

In a 2001 follow-up to the Queens University study mentioned above, researchers focused on cardiovascular health. Their finding? That by having sex three or more times a week, men reduced their risk of heart attack or stroke by half.

Better Bladder Control: Heard of Kegel exercises? You do them, whether you know it or not, every time you stem your flow of urine. The same set of muscles is worked during sex.

Pain Relief: Immediately before orgasm, levels of the hormone oxytocin surge to five times their normal level. This in turn releases endorphins, which alleviate the pain of everything from headache to arthritis to even migraines. In women, sex also prompts the production of estrogen, which can reduce the pain of PMS.

Sexual health importance is no less important than any other health people experience. So, studies show that the more sex you have, the better your sexual and life function will be.
