Being real and sincere with your audience is the way to reach their heart. If you can make them smile, make them laugh, make them feel..you are a winner! When you become a mouthpiece of their thoughts and opinion, you become a part of their daily life. But don’t forget to be yourself, because that’s how you stand out.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

As a child I was always told I talked a lot, I had stories to tell, opinion to share. In school, I used to participate in debate events with enthusiasm, loved to perform on stage be it theatre or dance.

Most of it was usually well received and that’s where the love for Media was born. I chose to study Mass Comm and Journalism in college to learn about the field further.

2. Why did you choose RJing as a career and what were the first steps you took?

I think RJing chose me! I was 20 and just a few months in the university studying Mass Comm and Journalism. I learned about a new radio station that was about to launch in my city and that they were looking for Radio Jockeys, I had no clue about the requirements of the job but almost everyone in my batch decided to give it a shot.

When we arrived at the auditions there must have been about 300 people there. We sat in a big group and they had us talk on various topics, some discussion and some regular chit chat. Nothing felt like an interview! I thought I blew it so bad that they didn’t even want to sit down and chat with me 1 on 1.

Cut to a week later, I got a call that I was hired! Turns out, that informal style of chit chat WAS the interview and they chose the ones who stop out. I was lucky to be chosen to host the Breakfast show at that brand new radio station, and that kicked started my radio career. The rest is history!

3. What challenges can one face during live calls?

The foremost challenge during a live call is, that the person on the other side is not a trained radio professional, so you automatically become the pilot of the call and have to steer the conversation in a way that the callers get to share their thoughts and you get the content you want to play on-air.

It should be crisp and clean [No curse words/ Nothing inflammatory] Keeping in mind that there’s almost always a time crunch on live shows but at the same time ensuring that the caller has a memorable experience talking to you and gets to enjoy the experience of being on-air.

4. What are the skills required to be a radio jockey?

The most important requirement is passion. If you are passionate about the field and want to express and share your ideas and thoughts with millions every day, this is the field for you.

Being informed about what’s happening around you, staying up to date with current events and trends, having a point of view and fluency in the language your station works in are equally important.

5. Does one also need to be technologically savvy in your field?

How can you not be? It’s 2020!

6. What makes a person connect with their audience as an RJ?

In my opinion and experience, being real and sincere with your audience is the way to reach their heart. If you can make them smile, make them laugh, make them feel..you are a winner! When you become a mouthpiece of their thoughts and opinion, you become a part of their daily life. But don’t forget to be yourself, because that’s how you stand out.
