Moksha Shah - One Should Have an Eye for Detail to Be a Photographer

I am into ambience, portraits, travel and culture miniature wildlife and street photography. I do not believe in sticking to a particular niche, so I try my hands on each and every type of photography.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

My name is Moksha Shah. I am a freelance photographer from Pune, Maharashtra. I am into ambience, portraits, travel and culture miniature wildlife and street photography.

I do not believe in sticking to a particular niche, so I try my hands on each and every type of photography. I have taken up 1 ambience photography contract for a local restaurant in Pune itself and about 15 portrait photography contracts.

2. How and when did you realize your passion for photography?

My passion for photography increased after my high school, we had a digital camera (sony), so I started clicking from that small digital camera, I enjoyed clicking and used to pass my time clicking pictures from it most of the time.

As I grew, I got a phone, so I started with phone photography. After finishing my HSC, I convinced my parents to buy me a DSLR so that I could get better in the game. Later on in summer, seeing my interest in photography, they bought me a camera.

I started clicking, practising, learning from YouTube videos and various newsletters. I learnt basic editing and started applying that editing in my photos and rest of the edit I explored experimenting.

After I was confident enough to portray my work, I started my Instagram page as @capturinguntoldstories. This is how I developed my interest in photography, and this is how it became my passion.

3. What are some tips you would like to share with amateur photographers?

Few tips I would like to share with the amateur photographer are :
  • Keep it simple - most of the photographers end up editing a lot which decreases the quality and vibe of the picture
  • Start looking at the world from a different perspective - photography is about creativity, and one should just imagine the frame in their mind before clicking the button.
  • Don't run behind likes, comments, followers - In today's world, most of the photographers do not have a proper portfolio. They portray their art on social media handles such as Instagram and Facebook.

Many of the young photographers or beginner photographers run behind followers likes and comments, which is not so important. They are just a result of your work so they should focus more on putting up great content than running behind these secondary factors.

4. What are the important skills one should have to be a successful photographer?

There are no such important skills to be photographer; anyone can be a photographer. They should have an interest, willingness and an eye of detail to be a photographer.

5. What are various opportunities available for aspiring photographers?

Many pages conduct photography contests, some magazines that feature the best clicks if he/she are into portraits they shall practice and put up some of the best shots on their page there is an excellent opportunity for that too.

Beginner photographers could also collaborate with other photographers to just gain more knowledge into the field, and as I mentioned before, practice more and more, and there will be a pool of opportunities.

6. Which is your favourite book and why?

I am not much of a book reader but I take immense joy in magazines, and one of my favourite magazines is chiiz (photography) magazine which is an e-magazine. The thing I love the most about this magazine is the way all the photos in it convey a story through visuals.
