Alessia Tan - My Biggest Challenge Will Always Be My Own Mindset (Nutritionist and Business Associate of USANA)

Alessia Tan

I am Alessia, a Nutritionist and Business Associate of USANA. I believe that a great life is lived with passion and value-adding to others. I am on the quest to spread health and help people to achieve time freedom.

1. Tell us more about your company and journey

I’m partnering with USANA Health Sciences, a company that manufactures the highest-rated nutritional supplements and world-renowned personal care products. Currently, the company is publicly listed and has a presence in 24 countries worldwide.

Being a nutritionist who has worked in the hospital and clinic for years, I see countless diseases and sufferings from my patients. This roller coaster took a toll on me. Thus, when I saw USANA’s vision coincide with mine, I took a turn and change my purpose in life.

“I dream of a world free from pain and suffering. I dream of a world free from disease. The USANA family will be the healthiest family on earth. Share my vision, love life, and live it to its fullest in happiness and health.”

What excites me is the quality of the products as compared to the conventional ones. We have more than 4000 Olympic Athletes taking USANA products for their World Championships.

The journey of spreading health is a joyful and meaningful one. Health is a new Wealth. Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live in.

2. How did you come up with this idea and go about executing it?

I came upon USANA from my business partner which I met on LinkedIn. When she first shared with me while I was working as a retail nutritionist, I was fascinated by the quality of nutritional products and the business model.

This business allows us to generate a stream of passive income and have an early retirement. Yet, keeping us healthy and stress-free!

Unlike a traditional business that requires high capital and high commitment, USANA business is entirely the opposite. The capital is so close to none and the commitment is entirely flexible as it runs online and at our own pace.

Thus, with the existing system our business team has created, we just have to leverage and duplicate!

3. What has been your biggest challenge and how do you overcome that?

My biggest challenge will always be my own mindset. When you think something is impossible, then it’s impossible. When you think something is achievable, you will achieve it no matter what.

I’ve always grown up to be very straightforward, tactless, and competitive. However, USANA business requires patience as well as communication and leadership skills.

Thus, I struggled the first few years not being able to better myself. Cultivating patience and being an empathetic person have been some of the biggest achievements I have from learning in the business.

Every time you fail, you learn something, and you try again. The only thing I did not do is not give up.

4. Where did you study nutrition and why you choose it as a career?

I studied Bachelor with Honors in Food and Human Nutrition from Newcastle University in Singapore Institute of Technology.

I started garnering immense interest in nutrition in secondary school from a subject called Home Economic. That was about 13 years of age where I decided to grow my passion in this area.

My purpose changed from treating diseased people to preventing disease in healthy people ever since my beloved late grandma passed away from cancer.

5. What are some of the factors for running a successful business?

Patience. Rome was not built in a day. Not even a month or a year. Some businesses take years to take flight. Give it some time when you feel that things are not working.

Grit. In a job, your boss pushes you. In a business, you push yourself. The amount of time and effort you put in will show in your results. You need to grind for your business to blossom.

Consistency. The first success is the tip of the iceberg. Do not let complacency take over. Two businessmen starting the same business at the same time, the one with more consistency and discipline win the race.

6. What are your tips for the first time and aspiring entrepreneurs?

Do something you love and have passion for.

It’s going to be your baby. You are going to have to feed and nurture it each day. Although people are going to walk away from it, not you.

7. What is your favorite book and why?

‘How to win friends and Influence People’. You may know one skill but a hundred people may know a hundred skills. If you are able to manage people and win their hearts, you are able to tap on all their skills.
