OTT Platforms Make Docuseries On Convicted Killers - Is It Healthy?

As the streaming through OTT platforms have way little censorship, the contents streamed are becoming more and more questionable. Here are a couple of series that streamed in the beginning of this year. Are they even allowed to be online in the first place?

Two Gloomy Series’

A docuseries, “Killer Inside: The Mind Of Aaron Hernandez”, based on the happenings of football player Aaron Hernandez under the genres of ‘True crime documentaries, Sports documentaries, US TV shows, Docuseries, Crime documentaries’ was released in Netflix on January 2020.

“Ted Bundy: Falling For A Killer” is also a docuseries where the girlfriend of a mass murderer, Elizabeth Kendall along with her daughter, comes forward to talk about him after nearly 40 years. This is a five-episode short series that aired in Amazon Prime on 30th January 2020.

Convict on Aaron Hernandez

Aaron Hernandez had been pressed charges on the murder of Odin Lloyd and a double murder. He was put behind the bars after two years the incident occurred. The football star who played in the National Football League (NFL) with the New England Patriots committed suicide after his arrest.

There were speculations arising on his sexuality and his ex-girlfriend cleared some air after the series got released. That was the first time she spoke of him in public after a very long time.

In an interview with ABC News, Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez used some sentences:

"You start to feel for people that may be hiding inside how they really feel. And I -- I feel awful for that"

Even though her emotions towards a person who had allegedly hidden his sexuality, thoughts to have helped him go through the hardships seem heart-whelming, her love towards a person who’s a killer is shocking.

Aaron’s case was not finalized as he committed suicide before his hearing. ‘Innocent until proven guilty’ doesn’t apply here.

70’s Serial Killer

Ted Bundy was convicted for the rape and murder of around 30 women during the last century. He was electrocuted in chair for his crimes in 1989. But there are speculations that there might be many unresolved cases that were of him.

Ted Bundy is the personification of evil, the “satan”. He had no empathy towards people and his heart was cold.

The Only Good Thing

The decision to make such series’ have a teeny-tiny positive note. It helps in creating awareness and the depth of crimes that are happening around us. But other than that, these series have no significance especially if you portray the murderers innocent.

Why Don’t We Need Such Series?

  • These series plant a thought on viewers that the convicted are human too and we should foresee their mistake. Well, costing a life should not be welcomed by, ever
  • As long as a thing remains unknown, we are blissfully unaware. When such things are brought into limelight, this kind of acts motivate others to commit crime in bulk
  • Focusing on positives is something the world surely deserves right now. Not some stories that are twisted for luring the watchers

Similarities in Both of Them

Ted Bundy and Aaron Hernandez had way too sad childhood. It played a major role in the personalities that they grew up as. Please make sure a child has safe and loved surrounding so that they have a heart that isn’t heartless enough to commit crimes in the future.
