Smriti Thakur - A Formal Training Is Very Important , It Could Help You Develop a Nice Vocal Range

There are way too many opportunities. You can start your own band or choose to become an independent artist. You can perform at cafes initially and release your own albums side by side. You can have your own mini live concerts or go and participate in a music show.

1. Tell us more about your background and journey.

Although, Nobody at home has received any formal training in vocal music , I’ve always been inclined towards music. I remember singing the entire day as a kid. So, my parents saw my interest and got me a music tutor. My journey has been great. I’ve participated in a lot of music competitions in school and out of school as well.

2. When did you first decide you wanted to pursue music and how did you start?

It’s been almost 9-10 years since I started singing but I didn’t decide on making it a career until this year. This lockdown gave me ample amount of time to think about choosing it as a possible career.

3. Who is your favourite artist and why?

My favourite Indian Artist is of course Arijit Singh. I love his range. Everything about his voice is perfect. My favourite English artist is Charlie Puth. His knowledge in music and crazy vocals always give me Goosebumps.

4. Can you throw some light on opportunities one gets as a singer?

There are way too many opportunities. You can start your own band or choose to become an independent artist. You can perform at cafes initially and release your own albums side by side. You can have your own mini live concerts or go and participate in a music show.

5. Is format training required or can one train themselves purely on the basis of talent?

A formal training is very important, in my opinion. It’ll help you understand your strong areas and weak ones. It could help you develop a nice vocal range.

6. What piece of advice would you like to give to future and aspiring artists?

First of all, please try to be very consistent. I’ve said that way too many times but I cannot stress it enough. Try to post at least once every week. I used to post twice a week when I started. But once college started and all, I reduced and brought it down to once a week because I got busy with assignments and all.

But, consistency is the key. Second, try to use every platform. I used Facebook a lot and a lot of my followers are from Facebook. I joined many groups on Facebook where I used to post pretty often. Third, please try to show your face when you’re singing.

It’s easier for people to connect that way. If you just black out your screen, people wouldn’t be interested in sharing your work. I’ve experienced that!

7. Which is your favourite book and why?

My favourite book is “How to Love” by Thich Nhat Hanh. The short paragraphs it has are beautiful and I love how the book has transformed my life for the good!
