Maia Makhateli

Ballet is not just performance it’s a whole lifestyle it’s a world on its own. I love the atmosphere of theater in general. Ballet is a lot more than just a performance there is a lot of Strength, Love and Dedication applied.

1. Tell us about your Background and Journey?

I was born into a Dancers Family in Republic of Georgia Tbilisi. Starting from my grandparents all were in the field of Art.

My grand father was a National Folk Dancer who was the first to invent difficult Georgian Folk steps. Grandmother opera singer, Mama, Dad Brother all dancers. And now still involved with dance.

2. What inspired you to pursue Ballet as a Career?

My biggest inspiration was my family they gave me a perfect example of achieving goals and reaching high mountains, my brother made a big impact on me, I wanted to follow his steps and wanted to make my family proud.

One of my ballet idols was Sylvia Guillem but the list goes on.

3. How would you define Ballet?

Ballet is a vocabulary of dance steps and movements which tell and express the story. I define ballet as a silent language where the body is allowed to express what it feels along with the music it’s an exceptional art form that leaves a big impact to a viewer.

4. What is your daily routine like?

My daily routine, day starts with a morning training and rehearsals go on until the end of a late afternoon, unless there is a performance then it goes on until almost midnight.

The schedule is very hectic with some breaks in between where you have to fit your normal life being a mom and a normal person :) although with corona a lot of things have changed and we work with very strict rules and tight protocols. I travel a lot but this is now very difficult.

5. What do you enjoy the most about Ballet?

Ballet is not just performance it’s a whole lifestyle it’s a world on its own. I love the atmosphere of theater in general. Ballet is a lot more than just a performance there is a lot of Strength, Love and Dedication applied.

Knowing that ballet can change people lives is incredible, knowing that ballet can make people smile and bring all sorts of emotions to audience it’s an amazing feeling and rewarding for all the hard work that is put into ballet since childhood.

6. How do you keep balance between your Personal and Professional Life?

It takes a lot of planning and logistics. Anything is possible if the will is there.

7. How can one become a successful Ballet dancer?

Ballet is a very crucial career there is a lot of competition and constant critic to be Perfect. But there is no such a thing as to be perfect or better than someone else, the only competition you have is yourself and the goal is to be better than yourself.

A constant never ending work motivation love strength mental strength along physical strength. A lot of work dedication and sometimes sacrifices to be made like moving the country and being far from home and family.

Setting a very hight mountain and constantly trying to reach it and never end trying to go higher. This requires admiration and a strong willpower. I love every minute of this

8. Which is your favorite Book and Why?

La Dame aux Camélias

Novel by Alexandre Dumas is my favorite. It became one of my favorites when I was preparing the role of Marguerite Gautier in John Neumeier’s ballet it helped me get to know her, and channel my inner Marguerite. It's a touching amazing story to live through and share it with the audience.
