The Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony - When and Where to Watch


History -


The Commonwealth Games started about 88 years ago. For the first time in 1930, the Games were held in the city of Hamilton, Canada. Talking about the title, these games to be held at a gap of every 4 years, the name of these games has been changed 4 times since 1930.


This time it is the 21st edition of the Commonwealth Games being held in Australia's Gold Coast. Talking of India in these Commonwealth Games, India has participated in 16 of the 20 editions completed so far and has won a total of 438 medals in these 88 years so far.


Among these medals are 155 gold, 155 silver, while 128 bronze medals have been named. India did not participate in these games in 1930, 1950, 1962, and 1986, while twice in 1938 (Sydney) and 1954 (Vancouver) they had to return home without winning a medal.


The best year for India at the Commonwealth Games was 2010 when India held these games and playing in their home country, they finished second in the medal table with 101 medals.  Australia topped it with 180 medals.


India won 39 gold, 26 silver, and 36 bronze medals in the year 2010.  After this, India finished 5th in the Games held in Glasgow in the year 2014.  It won a total of 64 medals here. This time 15 gold, 30 silver, and 19 brand medals came in his bag. This time India is expected to perform once again.



The Opening Ceremony -


The opening ceremony of the 21st Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia is taking place on 4 April.  Australia is hosting these games for the fifth time.  The Indian team will be led by shuttler PV Sindhu in the opening ceremony.  From India, this time 221 players are representing the country.


When India begins their campaign, the focus will be on world champion weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who is a strong contender for medals, while badminton players and boxers will also be eyeing.


Chanu, who won a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games 2014, is a strong contender for a medal in the 48 kg category.  Her best personal performance is 194 kg which is 10 kg more than her nearest rival in this event.  No weightlifters participating in these sports have crossed 180 kg.


Chanu's closest competitor is Canada's Amanda Braddock with the best personal performance of 173 kg. The Games will be held at Australia's Gold Coast Carrara Stadium (Queensland).
