Veda Nerurkar - Believe in Yourself and in Your Music

I was very young when I decided I wanted to be a singer. I have never thought of becoming anything else other than a singer. Music has been the most important part of my life, and I wish to keep it that way.

1. Tell us more about your background and journey.

I began my journey when I was two-and-a-half years old. My mom realised I can sing when I was very young, so she started teaching me music at that age. My mom has done her Masters in Music, and she is my first guru.

After a couple of years, I started learning from my second guru - Mrs Swarada Sathe. I started participating in a lot of local music competitions and won almost all of them. Then, I participated in Marathi SaReGaMaPa Lil Champs in 2010, and I was the runner up there.

The following year I participated in Hindi SaReGaMaPa Lil Champs where I was among the top 10 finalists. In college, I competed in a lot of college fests and won many of them. Some of them are Malhar, Umang, Vividh, Hashtag, and Mumbai University Youth Festival.

I have been learning under my third guru, Mrs Asha Khadilkar, for the past 6 years. I have acted in a Marathi Sangeet Natak called ‘Avagha Ranga Ekachi Zhala’. I was also a part of The Voice India Season 2.

I have done playback for many TV serials (D4 Get Up & Dance, Ladies Special) and I debuted in Bollywood last year with my first playback in the movie ‘Pushkar Lodge’.

2. When did you first decide you wanted to pursue music, and how did you start?

I was very young when I decided I wanted to be a singer. I have never thought of becoming anything else other than a singer. Music has been the most important part of my life, and I wish to keep it that way. I started learning music and participating in competitions around the age of 6 or 7.

3. Who is your favourite artist, and why?

I can’t say I have only one favourite artist. I look up to so many artists! Starting from Lata Mangeshkar Ji, Asha Bhosle Ji, Kishore Kumar Ji, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shreya Ghoshal, Sonu Nigam, Shankar Mahadevan, Javed Ali and so many more!

But one artist whose journey and music I absolutely love is Demi Lovato. She started her career at a very young age and has gone through many ups and downs. Nevertheless, she rose above everything and is shining like never before! Her music is so powerful, and it inspires me.

4. Can you throw some light on opportunities one gets as a singer?

There are a lot of opportunities one gets as a singer. You can be a playback singer, you can write your own songs and release them independently. All singers also perform live at gigs and concerts. Teaching music is also another career option. Music is endless, and so are the possibilities to have a career with music.

5. Is format training required, or can one train themselves purely on the basis of talent?

In my opinion, this differs from person to person. I know a few singers who are entirely self-taught and are amazing! But that doesn’t mean one should not take professional training.

Learning music from a teacher helps you put things into perspective and navigate your talents in the correct direction. I genuinely believe that having a teacher helps you a lot!

6. What piece of advice would you like to give to future and aspiring artists?

I would like to say, please have faith in yourself and do what you love. Be patient and work hard. Believe in yourself and, more than anything else, believe in your music!

7. Which is your favourite book, and why?

My favourite book is ‘An Autobiography of a Yogi’ by Paramhansa Yogananda. I am a spiritual person, and this book has definitely helped me in more ways than one. Even if you don’t believe in God or are not spiritual, do read this book. You’ll love it!
