Yan Blanco - Seeing Artists That I Like Following My Artwork Is An Amazing Thing (3D Artist)

I believe that a good design needs to be consistent. You need to feel that all the elements of the artwork make part of the same ‘universe’.

1. Tell us about you and your background

My name is Yan Blanco, I’m a Brazilian 3D artist currently working at Tangent Animation (Canadá).

I always liked to draw since my childhood, and my goal was to become a professional illustrator, but after the discovery of Blender 3D at the Graphic Design university (2014), I got mesmerized with the CGI world, and I started to upload more 3D art on my portfolio, and fewer illustrations.

Today I do only 3D art, but I like to try some sketches and idea drawings.

2. How would you describe your design research and what is your biggest design challenge?

I like to create characters in a different way than they appear on screens. Maybe the characters just look happy on the shows, and behind the cameras, they feel empty and sad. This is the way I see the world, sometimes we need to look at things differently than the way we really are.

My design challenge is to avoid creating the same stuff all the time. So I always try to learn new things, create different materials and looks, and push myself to achieve good artworks.

3. What constitutes a good design and what do you believe makes your outputs successful?

I believe that a good design needs to be consistent. You need to feel that all the elements of the artwork make part of the same ‘universe’. I think that most of the feedback on my artworks exists because I do fanarts, so people always recognize the characters.

But my goal is always to try to give my best on the technical parts, creating good quality materials and details, so in that way, I will keep learning and improving my skills in every artwork.

4. What are some of the basic software that one must be aware of in your field?

This is a tricky question. There are artists that use more than five softwares to create one artwork, and some artists use only one. In my case, I use Blender, Substance Painter, Zbrush and Photoshop for my artworks. Each software has its specific tools for each step of the process.

5. Share one of your favourite experiences as a digital creator with us.

There is no specific " favourite" experience in my career. But seeing artists that I like following my artwork, is an amazing thing. That makes me feel that I’m on the right path. It's different when you see dozens of random people following your work, and when one of the artists that you use as reference starts to admire your artwork.
