Design, whether it's UX design, visual design, or even fashion illustration, all three areas bring out the creative side of me in different ways. With UX and visual design, I can help solve problems for the user by creating a design solution that makes the user's experience better and delightful.
When it comes to fashion illustration and art, it's like an escape for me, an escape to a dreamy and peaceful place. I get the opportunity to express myself and my ideas into something more tangible for others to see and take part in.
1. Tell us about your background and journey.
For almost half of my life, I grew up and lived in Lebanon. Since I was little, I loved to draw, paint, even fix clothes, and add my own twist to them. Living there was tough because of wars, religion, and political conflicts. Having my family, cousins and friends made life easier and more fun.
Growing up seeing my aunts working with embroidery beading for fashion houses, I was always fascinated by their work and the different fabrics, sequins, and beads; that's what sparked my interest in haute couture and fashion. In 2006, my family and I moved to Sweden when the war burst between Israel and Lebanon.
When I arrived in Sweden, I had to learn a new language even though my mom was Swedish and adapt to a new culture. When I was little, my parents taught me the importance of hard work. If I wanted to become something in life, I needed to work hard and earn it, and so I did.
I graduated high school and took a bachelor's degree in fine arts at Luleå Technical University. I then started studying computer programming since it was challenging to find a job as a designer. And having done that led me to my first job as a UX designer at Jayway by Devoteam, where I work today. When I'm not working and not renovating my house, I'm usually painting, creating fashion illustrations, creating content for my Instagram, or doing freelance work.
2. What inspired you to pursue designing ?
Design, whether it's UX design, visual design, or even fashion illustration, all three areas bring out the creative side of me in different ways. With UX and visual design, I can help solve problems for the user by creating a design solution that makes the user's experience better and delightful.
When it comes to fashion illustration and art, it's like an escape for me, an escape to a dreamy and peaceful place. I get the opportunity to express myself and my ideas into something more tangible for others to see and take part in.
3. Which is your favourite art style or movement and why ?
My favorite two favorite art styles are Art Nouveau and Impressionism. Art Nouveau is very decorative and has a mix of nature, curves, and flowers, which I love. There is something magical about Impressionism; it allows you to depict the world you see in your way with playful color use and imagination.
4. Which graphic designing software do you prefer most ?
My go-to software design tools are Adobe Illustrator, Figma, and Adobe Photoshop.
5. How do you overcome a creative block ?
What usually helps when having a creative block is to do something totally different to help me think of something else, like going out for a walk, outdoor activities, watch documentaries or movies or even meet friends to give myself a break and get inspired.
6. How would you describe your muse?
I would describe my muse as feminine, colorful, elegant, floral, bold, and brings joy and imagination to the viewer.
7. What message would you give to aspiring designers?
Find something you are passionate about, stick to it, work hard and practice practice, and practice. Be patient, be willing to fail and welcome criticism because you will grow as a person and your work will improve.
8. Which is your favourite book and why?
It is tough only to choose one. Still, if I had to choose a fashion illustration-related book, I would say "100 years of fashion illustration" by Cally Blackman because you get to see and read about illustrations going back to the 1900s and I find myself going back to it for inspiration. For UX/UI design, I would say "Don't make me think" by Steve Krug because it's really entertaining and light to read, and it covers the basics of web usability and mobile design.
