The History of The United Nations

The history of the United Nations is a rich history full of events and achievements. Its creation was due to a lot of development in the world politically where peace is no longer founded. Its foundation was remarkably valid after World War 1 where a lot of nations decided to find an establishment of peace and treaties where the world can unify its word and decision on one thing. However, a lot of questions are always raised and a lot of people do not know how the United Nations was created.

How was the United Nations Created?

Historically speaking, the United Nations is an international foundation founded by many countries back in 1945 after the hectic Second World War where a lot of troops were killed and huge losses. Europe back then was hugely destroyed because of the war, and the world needed drastic changes concerning peace-making ideology. Therefore, fifty-one countries decided to make the first step towards an international state of peace by creating the United Nations which was for the following purposes:

  • Maintaining international peace despite everything,

  • Developing friendly relationships within nations themselves and seek to have it. between those who are in a war.

  • Popularizing the urge of having better living standards.

  • Popularizing with the emergency of fighting for human rights in the world.

Does the United Nations have a Power?

The United Nations have a strong power that exists in its creation charter were to make strong actions over a wide range of issues. one of the functionalities is giving to its nowadays members which are estimated by 193 - they are called-Member States- to say out loud their views.

The building of the United Nations exists in New York, and the internal body of the United Nation is divided into committees. The most famous committees which are known for their varied activities in the World are The Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, UNHCR which is concerned with Refugees Issues and other ones. The United Nation was firstly known for its political orientation to maintain peace, however, the world does not have only political issues to be solved.

What is in there More than Just Politics?

As previously mentioned, the United Nations was for Political Purposes; but with the changes in the world and the rise up of more serious problems and issues it turned out to have different bodies and committees to carry on with. Thus, we can call it a body of reaching every corner of the Globe issues; We can state some words that anyone can make parallel to the word United Nations nowadays than just a political body: peacebuilding, peacemaking, conflict prevention, and humanitarian assistance. The mission of the United Nations in our recent times and in previous times as well is:

  • Sustainable Development;

  • Environment and Refugees Protection;

  • Counter-Terrorism;

  • Democracy;

  • Human Rights;

  • Gender Equality;

  • Advancement of women governance;

  • Economic and social development;

  • International health;

  • Food Production Expanding;

  • Safer World and Safer Future for Other Generations.

Successes and Failures

Like any other institution, they can have successes and failures concerning achieving their goals and missions. However, we shed light on the United Nations' successes in feeding over millions of children in the world; especially, in Africa in the last decades. It helped with the food production to fight global hunger in some countries.

It assisted over thirteen million refugees in the world such as the Syrian refugees, Palestinian refugees, and Neymar refugees. It also authorized international peacemaking missions in the world which were over 80 missions. It helped with vaccination against a lot of diseases and illnesses like Malaria.

It protected Human rights and helped women in many issues like maternal issues in the world. The failures that are popularized about the U.N are all about the internal corruption that exists in all the world institutions who take some things out of the U.N for their benefits. Some most popular issues are the crisis of the Sudan where the peacemaking treaty of protecting civilians from death or rape was unsuccessful. Sexual allegations where U.N peacekeepers were accused in Congo of rape or paying for sex issues. Despite all of these scandalous affairs, the U.N still has a strong body of function in the World.

The Last Words…

There is a huge fact that the U.N was created for peacemaking, but we still see a lot of wars in the world and needs; because peacemaking is not only concerned and narrowed in the bodies of the U.N only, but it needs huge efforts by everyone and each individual in the world.
