Just sit back, take a cup of coffee or tea as you please, and come along with Jonny Sun into his realm and feel like chit-chatting with him over a cup of tea.
Introduction
Book’s Name - Goodbye, Again
Author’s Name - Jonny Sun
Language - English
Genre - Non-fiction, Essays
Synopsis - Spoiler alert!
Jonny Sun talks explicitly to people like me who live in a constant state of flux. The writer, who is aware of and has undergone goodbyes, redirects his attention to the present in order to reorient himself in the societies around him.
He tries to "fill the blankness" of city weekends, but "rather than turning to people, activities, Going Places, or Seeing Things," he writes, "I find it easier to turn to doing more work to try to fill, or maybe hold at bay, that void and that feeling I can't ever fill that emptiness enough."
He confronts this learned answer of dealing with isolation by productivity in a light-hearted tone.
When he doesn't have enough words to tell a story, the multihyphenate combines genres, combining artistic mediums such as recipes and drawings with the written word.
"Whenever I'm in an unfamiliar location, it's become a coping mechanism for me to search for plants that I know from elsewhere, as well as plants that I've never seen before anywhere else but that I can start recognising as familiar," he writes on one page, then demonstrates with succulents on another.
His love of plants is a metaphor for feeling connected to his societies, as well as a reminder of what we can learn from them: rest is important; development takes time; and some things never change.
About the Book
This is a fantastic novel. Sun's captivating and immersive novel, which is made up of hundreds of short essays and drawings, invites readers to listen in as he thinks aloud on the paper.
Goodbye, Again recognises work's crippling constancy and fear, but it also embraces the thrill of making something new—the enjoyment of becoming fully absorbed in work and the way work can bring us to life.
Sun gives his readers permission to feel their own inconsistencies and to be truly human by gently acknowledging all sides of this fact in concrete ways.
About the Author
Jonny Sun is a Chinese-Canadian digital developer, blogger, and artist, to name a few of his many names. Every essay in Goodbye, Again is laced with complexities told by his relentless movements, self-imposed demands, and bittersweet goodbyes, recognisable at first sight to another third culture kid in America.
Sun is skilled at picking tidbits that a broader audience can relate to, such as feeling out of place in his childhood home but finding community at a local restaurant.
Psychological Analysis
Jonny Sun makes you feel like a friend. His words never force you to go in a certain direction; instead, they allow you to linger in them. The book covers a wide range of subjects, from MSN Messenger to jazz music to Tetris, so transitioning from one essay to the next can require you to take a step back and consider all of the big ideas in just a few pages.
The layout, which is divided into six parts, from "Goodbye," "Hello," and "Goodbye, Again," allows you to take breaks between any stories if necessary.
It's uncommon for a book to physically accommodate what the author wants to do — giving you space to sit with isolation and burnout, even if it means momentarily leaving his life to do so.
Famous Quotes
“You have your entire life to worry about the rest of your life. Just get through today. Don’t tell yourself ‘don’t worry’, but just, ‘worry smaller’.” Advice from Jonny Sun's wife, Elissa.”
The Bottom Line
The reader can sense Sun's desire for rebirth through explanations like these. The book is upbeat because it demonstrates how small events from the past, such as frying an egg, can reverberate in the present.
We never really say goodbye in this way. We're all together and remember each other in little ways on a regular basis.
Spending time with this book is spending time in the private world of an artistic, sensitive person who finds life both inviting, beautiful, and rich, as well as daunting, frightening, and exhausting.
