My style is some kind of mix of expressive oil painting with some finer elements. I like to keep my works a bit unfinished because I believe that too much detail can kill the freshness and expression of the painting. I also love neon colors, vibrant palettes, and glowing accents. My favorite subject to draw is robots doing some human things.
1. Tell us about your background and journey.
My name is Kateryna Belikova (aka Ninja Jo), I'm an artist from Ukraine and I have been drawing since I can remember myself. My parents got me into a drawing school, then I went to an art college, where I graduated with a bachelor's degree. I learned traditional art and was a fully traditional artist since 2012 when I first tried to draw digitally.
2. When and how did you decide to pursue graphic designing?
My friend presented me with a graphic tablet because she knew I always dreamed about it and that's when my digital art began to develop.
3. How would you describe your style and aesthetics?
My style is some kind of mix of expressive oil painting with some finer elements. I like to keep my works a bit unfinished because I believe that too much detail can kill the freshness and expression of the painting. I also love neon colors, vibrant palettes, and glowing accents. My favorite subject to draw is robots doing some human things.
4. What qualities and skills should a good graphic designer have?
I think the most important thing for any artistic job - is not to be afraid to try something you never tried before. Be open to different approaches, and don't' try to be like someone else or copy someone. Keep your works unique and reflect something that you are, not what you think people want to see from you.
5. How do you overcome creative block?
When it comes to any art/creative block - I just stop doing anything art-related and let myself get a good rest. Go outside, watch a movie, or do something really different than what I usually do. For example, if I have a hard time with digital art, I shift myself to a different medium like ink or traditional water color, it helps a bit.
6. Which artist do you admire the most and why?
One of my favorite's is Syd Mead because of his incredible concepts for great movies, and John Harris because of his expressive painting style and colors.
7. What message would you give to the aspiring graphic artists?
Practice! Everyday practice. There's no YouTube tutorial or even that would teach you how to transfer your ideas to the real world better than just YOU, practicing every day, developing your skill, and getting better with each new drawing.
8. Which is your favorite book and why?
I don't have favorite books, I like all that I've read, and they are all too different to pick just one. Or I can name just one that's useful more than others - Anatomy for artists.
