“No one can keep the reigns on Kong.”

The next epic chapter in the Monster Verse is here, bringing you two legends (alpha) that collide with each other in a spectacular battle of the ages with the fate of the human world in their hand.

Introduction

Movie’s Name - Godzilla Vs Kong (2021)

Director’s Name - Adam Wingard

Genre - Thriller, Monster, Action, Fantasy & Science Fiction

Language - English (USA)

Synopsis - Spoiler Alert!

Kong’s protectors take Kong from Skull Island (his former home) to find his ultimate true home called ‘Hollow Earth’ (which is home to many Titans) with the intention to find an entrance into it that can provide APEX with an invaluable resource of energy for their Mechagodzilla robot to function with unlimited power. The robot was made to replace Godzilla so humans, APEX, can start ruling the world again.

The movie features an orphaned girl Jia who has built a unique and powerful bond that helps her to communicate with Kong. However, in their journey to the hollow earth they soon find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla.

This initial confrontation between the two at the deck of an aircraft carrier is only the beginning of a mystery unknown that lies deep within the core of the planet.

Like always Legendary’s Monster Verse movies never fail to impress us. Similarly, ending on a good note, Godzilla and Kong acknowledge each other as ‘not enemies’ and go their separate ways. Sometime later the movie shows Monarch with an established observation post in the Hollow Earth, where Kong now rules.

Quick Flash into the Movie

Source - Slash Films

The movie is a sequel to both Godzilla: King of the Monster (2019) and Kong: Skull Island (2017). It is the fourth film in the Legendary’s Monster Verse completed by a Hollywood studio. The movie is also another addition in the Godzilla franchise and King Kong franchise.

The movie features stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown (famous for her role as 'Eleven' in the Netflix series ‘Stranger Things’), Rebecca Hall, Shun Oguri (Ren Serizawa), Brian Tyree Henry, Kyle Chandler, Julian Dennison, etc.

The movie was a crowd-pleasing and a straight up action picture that introduced the exploration to another world extravagantly through a heart-warming drama about Titans (the original gods of our world) and their human pals.

Most scenes of the movie take place in Hong Kong, China. The picturesque representation with rainstorms, explosions, reptiles, amphibians and hybrids flying as well as the role of Skull Crawlers makes it the best studio film so far this year.

Mechagodzilla - Inspired from a Transformer’s movie?

“It’s a living supercomputer.”

- Bernie Hayes

The entrance of a giant AI robot developed by APEX in the movie and telepathically controlled by Ren Serizawa, the son of late Ishiro Serizawa, through neural networks from the skull of Monster Zero, King Ghidorah, is said to be inspired from a Transformer’s movie because the robot on receiving the energy source from the Hollow Earth starts thinking for itself.

It is hobbled by its power supply limitations, the reason to find hollow earth that can harness its energy into Mechagodzilla to overcome its limitations. Thus, leading to the ultimate and most awaited fight between the three with Godzilla and Kong later teaming up against the robot.

Theme Involved

“Kong bows to no one.”

- Dr. Ilene Andrews

The movie’s central theme revolves around the ancient rivalry between the two Titans and their clans. It focuses on how the two are the last one’s standing and that in a world there cannot be two Alpha Titans.

“This won’t end until one of them submits.”

- Dr. Ilene Andrews

To this, the moment Kong is moved out of his containment zone Godzilla comes for him to finish the ancient war; the two are adamant in defeating each other until one falls to death.

Another theme that this movie focuses on is the evil intentions of Walter Simon towards replacing Godzilla with Mechagodzilla in order for APEX to rule the world.

To succeed in achieving the goal, APEX makes use of Skull Crawlers that were first seen in the movie ‘Kong: Skull Island’ to test the robot’s compatibility and power to make it an undefeatable weapon.

The Bottom Line

The Monster Verse films are best at freeing up space to develop relationships between humans and monsters, and monsters and monsters - not just between humans. A consequential theme  this big magical screenplay show casts  that makes it interesting to watch.

The movie is a must watch and ends with a message- though Godzilla may be the alpha of the surface world, but Kong is the ‘King’ of the Hollow Earth, which is the real home of his species.

My ratings for the movie - 5 on 5
