I love the idea of mixing nature with human beauty. That's why I often add flowers and leaves to my portraits. Also, I am really into bright vibrant colors and their mixing. So my art is about a delicate balance of reality and fantasy, nature and human, cold and warm colors.
1. Tell us about your background and journey.
My name is Polina and I'm 20 y.o. full-time artist. All my family is connected with medicine so my penchant for drawing became a surprise for everyone. I started my art journey when I was 10. I entered local art school where I spent 7 years studying basic principles of drawing. Also, I had several active hobbies like horse riding and dance but had to quit it because of my health.
2. How and when did you decide to pursue art?
Unfortunately, we didn't draw portraits at school so in 2017 I decided to start learning this topic myself. I've always been calm and hard-working so it wasn't difficult for me to practice with portraits for many hours a day. Firstly I just watched other artist's techniques and tried to repeat the details.
In several months I got enough experience to start creating my own color schemes and style. After 4 years of almost everyday practice, I started to understand watercolor and other supplies better. Now I combine drawing for my soul and commissioned arts. It's very important to organize your day and have a rest from drawing not to get burnout.
3. How would you describe your art style?
I love the idea of mixing nature with human beauty. That's why I often add flowers and leaves to my portraits. Also, I am really into bright vibrant colors and their mixing. So my art is about a delicate balance of reality and fantasy, nature and human, cold and warm colors.
4. Which mediums do you usually work with and why?
I really love watercolor and pencil drawing. I like to be different so pencil gives me simple strict forms and strokes, and watercolor works the opposite - it gives me freedom, colors, randomness. It's like magic when watercolor creates some spots itself because you added a bit more water and forgot about it. Very unpredictable material!
5. Which artist do you admire the most and why?
I love old-school impressionists. Like August Renuar, Vincent Van Gogh. I love arts with paint strokes, like "The Starry Night". My art teacher told me that art should be so interesting that you can look at it for hours. And pictures of these artists really look like that.
6. What message would you give to aspiring artists?
Spend some time on learning basics. Specially anatomy and color blending. It really helps. Don't be afraid of experiments - your art is your own story so you can do everything you want. And never give up! Remember that every famous artist you know also started from something simple.
7. Which is your favorite book and why?
I think you expect to see there some art romantic books but my book tastes are very specific and dark. I love Stephen King, especially "Under The Dome". I love to follow the chain of accidents leading to an unexpected and interesting outcome!
