Brandon Rollin - Found Painting Dots to Be Very Meditative and It Quickly Became My Passion (Artist from USA)

Brandon Rollin

During my art classes while learning about different styles of painting, I found myself particularly drawn to pointillism. I was introduced to Vance Kirkland’s work and instantly fell in love and had to try myself. I found painting dots to be very meditative and it quickly became my passion.

1. Tell us about your background and journey.

I have lived in Colorado all my life. I grew up in Littleton and relocated up to beautiful Boulder CO where I attended CU Boulder and ended up staying for many years. Recently I got married and moved to Colorado Springs to be closer to family. I love the outdoors and all that this beautiful state has to offer but I also love to travel and experience new things!

2. When and how did you decide to pursue art?

I took my first art class in high school back in 2003 and fell in love with creating in all forms. I experimented with many mediums until I discovered pointillism. I was encouraged by my man teachers, professors to keep at it, so I did. Once I found my preferred technique I worked hard to grow and improve while I also worked full time. Eventually I was able to quit my job at a restaurant in Boulder and pursue art full time.

3. How did it started with dots?

4. What was your most amazing work experience?

I would say live painting and showing my artwork at festivals. Especially Arise Music Festival in Loveland Colorado. The experience is unmatched being able to connect with people face to face about my art and the energy there makes it an amazing experience.

5. What were the struggles in your career as an artist and how did you overcome them?

At first, I was painting only for myself and only showing my work to friends and family so getting myself out there in the beginning was a new challenge. I stated participating in small local shows as well as creating art pages on social media where I was able to gain traction and get my work out to the world. By easing into it, over time I gained more confidence with interacting with new people about my art.

6. Who inspires you the most and why?

Vance Kirkland was a huge inspiration to me when I was starting. I have discovered countless amazing artists through social media that inspire me daily.

7. What message would you give to aspiring artists?

Find a medium that you are passionate about and stick with it. Get out there anyway you can, and practice daily! I have been painting for 18 years and still am learning and evolving.

8. Which is your favorite book and why?

The Dark Tower series by Stephen King. The world he creates in these books is fascinating and the story keeps you wanting more!

Brandon Rollin

I'm a Colorado artist who specializes in dot paintings. Using thousands of colorful dots I create intricate compositions that result in a feast for the eye. It's fascinating to me that dots are so simple by nature, yet they combine to create very complex and beautiful patterns.

A lot of my work is abstract with the goal of creating visual experiences that have never been seen before. I'm always striving to evolve and create new patterns with the dots themselves. Along with this, I have incorporated woodworking into my process. More often than not my canvas consists of wood carvings of my own design, along with the occasional wildlife piece. Each one unique in their own way.
